La Quinta Resort & Club Gets a Multi-Million Dollar Restoration

La Quinta Resort & Club Gets a Multi-Million Dollar Restoration

Opened in 1926, the 45-acre Spanish-inspired La Quinta Resort & Club became famous as a hideout from paparazzi for Hollywood legends Katherine Hepburn, Humphrey Bogart, Frank Capra, and Clark Gable.

The iconic resort recently underwent a multi-million dollar renovation, resulting in a fresh modern design that reflects the property’s storied history and spectacular Santa Rosa Mountain setting.

All guest casitas have been upgraded, and the villas, main lobby, public spaces, and pool areas all underwent redesigns. Additionally, the lush landscaping has been enhanced with additional roses, citrus trees, and bougainvilleas.

Los Angeles-based firm Smith and Firestone drew inspiration from the resort’s colorful desert environment for the newly designed guestrooms and suites. Set in an earthern palatte of terracotta, ivory, and chocolate, guest rooms feature custom tile work and wrought-iron elements, new furniture and carpets, and two-toned blocked drapes. Citrus-hued pillows and throws adorn wingback-style headboards and Victorian chairs. New amenities include big flat-screen televisions, mini fridges, Keurig coffee makers, and upgraded fireplaces.

Popular Starlight casitas now house new patio fire features and furniture, and suites are surrounded by updated landscaping, new furniture, and renovated decks around private pools and spas. All pool areas have fresh new decking, contemporary shade structures, and water temperature regulators.

La Quinta features 620 casitas and suites and 98 villas, a 23,000-square-foot spa, 41 swimming pools, 53 hot spas, and 23 tennis courts. The resort’s flagship hacienda-style restaurant, Morgan’s in the Desert, is named after Walter H. Morgan, a California businessman who founded the property in 1926. Morgan’s houses the original arched wood ceiling and huge fireplace. The space is divided into a large U-shaped bar offering live music and small plates, an outdoor patio area, and a large main dining room.

Morgan’s offers a variety of vintage cocktails, including a rosemary salty dog (gin, grapefruit juice, and fresh rosemary) and the Crimson Reaper (Death’s Door gin, cherry liqueur, and lemon juice), as well as small plates like ahi tuna tartare, oysters, and roasted beet salad. Main courses are focused on local ingredients and include porcini-crusted fillet with grilled mushrooms, pan-roasted duck breast with apple and shallot salad, and Hawaiian red salt-crusted mahi mahi.

The Adobe Grill is the resort’s Mexican restaurant, featuring a large outdoor patio, guacamole made tableside, an indoor double-sided fireplace, and award winning tamales and margaritas. Below the Grill is Twenty6, the resort’s art deco-inspired American bistro. Guests can indulge in Bacon’d Bloody Marys for breakfast and green eggs and ham pizza with house-made sauces, including ketchup and steak sauce.

The Three Amigos Call it a Day

Today will be our longest ride so far – 300 miles – and it marks our last day on the road as a threesome.

By tonight, we should be back in Lake Arrowhead, ready to return to our own homes – and life as we know it. You knew the party had to end eventually.

After a hearty (not) breakfast at The motel in Three Rivers, we work our way south on Highway 198, riding along the southern shore of Lake Kaweah.

The lake is a reservoir, formed by Terminus Dam on the Kaweah River. Its primary purpose is flood control, so the lake is maintained at a very low – or empty – level most of the year. It generally only fills in May and June. Because of California’s unprecedented drought, the lake is now unusually low, affecting lake recreation and nearby farming.

We follow Highway 198 to the eastern outskirts of Visalia, and turn east onto Yokohl Drive. The road rises gently through rolling hills as we ride thru Yokohl Valley, named after a band of Foothill Yokuts Indians.

Surprises on a mountain road. Chains, in the summer?

Twenty-two miles later, we rejoin Highway 190 and turn east. For the next 20 miles, the road is extremely twisty, with numerous switchbacks and blind curves. We’re riding at less than 20 miles an hour much of the time.

The Pierpoint Springs Resort is one of the few places along this roller coaster to grab a beverage and a snack. They have great homemade pie, too. And a wi-fi hotspot!

From here, the road continues to be extraordinarily twisty. Eventually, the elevation drops 7,000 feet to the valley floor. Highway 190 becomes Route 107, the Great Western Divide Highway.

Twenty miles from the Pierpoint Springs pie stop, following a long descent, we arrive in Long Meadow Grove, home of the Trail of 100 Giants. The grove covers about 341 acres of giant sequoias.

On the Trail of 100 Giants.

There’s a unique mile-long interpretive trail, where you can get a close-up look at the grove’s more than 800 sequoias. One hundred twenty-five of them are more than 10 feet in diameter.

This is one of the few sequoia groves with a large number of “twins,” two sequoias growing tightly side-by-side, in order to share resources. This grove even has one twin that rangers call a “sequedar,” a sequoia and a cedar that have grown together.

On April 15, 2000, President Bill Clinton proclaimed the establishment of the Giant Sequoia National Monument and made his announcement beneath one of the giant trees at the Trail of 100 Giants.

“These giant sequoias clearly are the work of the ages,” the President said, as he dedicated the National Monument. “They grow taller than the Statue of Liberty, broader than a bus, they are the largest living things on this Earth so perfectly adapted to their environment that one has never been known to die of old age. They began when America was not even imagined, and Europe was in the Dark Ages.”

100 Giants, and I’m not one of them.

Ten miles east, we pass through Johnsondale, elevation 4,711 feet. Now on Mountain Highway 99, we roll south along the Kern River. It’s a 2,000-foot drop and a 45-minute ride to Kernville. The mid-day sun is searing. White water river adventures – rafting and kayaking – are a popular activity on the Kern River, particularly in the spring. Right now, in mid-summer, the river is barely moving. River rafting companies have shut down operations until next year, hoping for greater snowpack and runoff in 2016. Rafting season this year was completely cancelled.

The Kern River was named after artist and topographer Edward Kern, and so, obviously, was the city of Kernville. Kernville’s big annual event is Whiskey Flat Days, the yearly celebration of the historic Wild West days here. The event is held every President’s Day weekend. We weren’t even close.

Lunch in Kernville, at the Kern River Brewery.

A few miles south of Kernville, we spot the north shores of Lake Isabella, a reservoir in Kern County created by Isabella Dam. At 11,000 acres, it’s one of the larger reservoirs in California. We pass through the South Fork Wildlife Area, turn east on Highway 178, and quickly pass through Weldon. Highway 178 is also called the Isabella Walker Pass Road.

Walker Pass is slightly less than a mile high – 5,250 feet – and is a National Historic Landmark. The highest point on Highway 178, it was charted as a route through the Sierra in 1834 by Joseph R. Walker, a member of the Bonneville Expedition. Walker learned of the route from Native Americans.

The 2,663-mile Pacific Crest Trail, which begins at the US-Mexico border and ends at the US-Canada border, crosses Highway 178 at Walker Pass. Northbound hikers who arrive at Walker Pass can look forward to the longest roadless stretch of the entire trail. The trail crosses many of the areas we’ve been for the past week, including Yosemite National Park, Kings Canyon National Park, Sonora Pass, Ebbetts Pass and Carson Pass.

The Pacific Crest Trail was made famous in the 2014 Hollywood film, Wild, starring Reese Witherspoon as trekker Cheryl Strayed, on a journey of self-discovery and healing. Hey everyone … take a hike.

Descending from Walker Pass, in eight miles we come to a T in the road at the junction with Highway 14 – the Aerospace Highway. Faced with our biggest decision of the day – north or south – we counter-intuitively turn north.

With a few jogs in the road, we ride through Inyokern, a hybrid name combining Inyo and Kern Counties. Inyokern is actually in Kern County.

In Inyokern, we turn south on US Highway 395, which we’ll follow for the next 50 miles. While highly scenic in the Sierra Nevada Mountains, Highway 395 from Inyokern south is straight, flat and boring. You’d expect that of the Mojave Desert. The Mojave is a high desert in Inyokern, we’re at 2,455 feet. But it’s still a desert and in the mid-afternoon sun, it’s blazing hot.

As we approach Kramer Junction, we eye, on our right, a massive solar power generating plant. It’s part of the Solar Energy Generating Systems, whose capacity at several locations in the desert is 354 megawatts. The facility is privately owned and operated by NextEra Energy Resources, which says 354 megawatts is enough to power more than 232,000 homes.

The complex of 936,384 high-tech mirrors is the world’s second largest solar thermal energy generating facility, consisting of nine solar power plants in the Mojave Desert. The solar generation uses parabolic trough, solar thermal technology to make electricity. Mirrors and heat transfer make it all happen.

The Kramer Junction solar facility receives an average of 340 days of sunshine a year. Today is one of them.

Scott cools off on a 102-degree day at Kramer Junction.

Kramer Junction, also known as Four Corners, sits at the intersection of US Highway 395 and California Highway 58. It has several gas stations, fast food restaurants, a slow food restaurant (The Roadhouse), a population of 2,231, and not much else.

An Icee break at Kramer Junction.

West on Highway 58 takes us to Mojave, home to the Mojave Air and Space Port where the first private space flight, SpaceShipOne, was launched in 2004. East on Highway 58 brings us to Barstow, a transportation hub named after William Barstow Strong, former president of the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.

But we are heading south, so we continue on US-395 for another 40 blah miles.

One of the few interesting sights along the way is just north of Adelanto, where we roll by the Southern California Logistics Airport – a boneyard for retired commercial airplanes. The airport, perhaps more diplomatically and euphemistically, calls itself a “transitional” facility. A halfway house for distressed aluminum.

Formerly George Air Force Base – which closed in 1993 – the logistics airport has a 15,000-foot runway. That’s the longest in the US, other than Denver International Airport. The Southern California Logistics Airport, technically in Victorville, can accommodate all currently flying commercial and military aircraft, 24 hours a day. The facility claims VFR (Visual Flight Rules) weather 360 days a year, meaning there are a lot of clear, sunny days, perfect flying weather. Good for Harley riding, too. Except for the heat.

Because of the dry climate here, it’s a conducive environment for preserving aircraft. To protect airliners during their storage from wind and sun damage, engines and windows are tightly covered with white, reflective materials – allowing the airplane to be stored safely for years until it’s ready to return to active duty, or be salvaged. Airliner boneyards in the western US serve several functions: temporary storage, maintenance, parts reclamation, and scrapping.

Just before hopping on I-15, I take one last hydration break.

In 13 miles, we merge onto I-15 south and continue our journey to Lake Arrowhead. We’re not big fans of Interstate highway riding, so we fortunately are on I-15 for only eight miles before exiting at Cajon Junction. If that sounds familiar, it’s because we crossed Cajon Junction on Day 1 on our way to the Angeles Crest Highway.

We turn east onto Highway 138 for the 22 mile ride past Silverwood Lake and Crestliine. Three miles on the Rim of the World Highway, and we’re back in Lake Arrowhead, where our journey began eight days ago – and where it now ends.

To view today’s route from Three Rivers to Lake Arrowhead, click here.

Cheers! To a safe trip, and looking forward to the next one.

The holidays would not be the same without glittering gifts, twinkling lights and our favorite holiday stories. One such story seems to make the heart swell with warm emotion as the main character learns of the importance of kindness that transcends monetary value and façade. Dr. Suess’s The Grinch, tells the story of an villainous curmudgeon that puts away his evil pursuit of destroying Christmas for the inhabitants of the fictitious Who-Ville as he hears their joyous voices echo into the canyon, unhinging his plans on ruining their holiday celebration.

Where did this redemptive character receive his fictcious embodiment? In a place known as La Jolla (la hoya) California where bestselling author Theodore Ted Geisel, aka Dr. Suess, resided for many years. Not only did Suess create his greeny mean Grinch here, this place also inspired his hundreds of other fantastical characters that made their way onto the printed page through his masterful rhythmical prose. The University of California at San Diego in La Jolla exhibits the most extensive collection of Geisel’s material and is must visit for the Suess obsessed. A trip to La Jolla turned into a fabulous two day adventure that gave us insider information on this famous La Jolla resident and the many lovely recreational and dining options that are available to the general public, but we are sure, were frequented by this famous resident.
La Jolla is known as the “Jewel” of San Diego and for good reason there are a myriad of natural and physical wonders that abound in this pristine destination that does conjure up creativity and inspiration. Starting with a short drive to our Balanise style boutique hotel, the Pantai Inn.We thought of Seuss’s love of exotic places and faraway mythical lands and this boutique resort would have fit right into his creative outlay.

The Pan Tai Inn embodies the perfect holiday get-away as it rests peacefully over the ocean cliffs where the echoing calls of the nearby sea lions fill the air with their mournful bellows and gliding sea gulls gawk back as though consoling the languorous mammals.

Complete with flowing fountains, bamboo fixtures and exotic art work, we felt we stepped into a Balinese paradise as our effervescent concierge escorted us to the best suite that sat directly adjacent to panoramic ocean view. Complete with rattan style furnishing, gas fireplace, and a full kitchen we felt embraced by the spirit of island hospitality. Pantai Inn has a boutique collection of rooms, suites and cottages for every travelers needs that also includes lavish complimentary breakfast, wireless internet access and parking. With a lovely gift of baked goods to welcome us, we were ready for a sweet treat and some Seuss style adventure.

Our first outing for the day was an electric bike tour at San Diego Fly Rides for a SoCal Riviera Tour of La Jolla. We were going to get an up close look at the flora and fauna while burning off the copious amounts of sugar that we just consumed. Adjusting to the bike took a few minutes of finagling, but our handsome guide made sure we all felt comfortable as these bikes don’t need much man power to take off down the road. Helmet on, wheels in place and we were off to our first stop the coastal cliffs right below the Pantai inn.

The weather was indeed stellar, as we glided to a halt in the city park to hear our guide give us the first of many mini lectures on his beloved city. Today we were getting up close and personal with the sea lions but with their close proximity to humans, many try to get too close for a sealion selfies regardless of federal laws. We were quickly reminded us of that quandary as our guide quickly reprimanded a middle aged couple for getting to close to this seemingly relaxed animal.

Our next route took us along the gated multi-million dollar luxury homes – you can totally see why people come out West to California to live in this beautiful state in houses built by the likes of Bright Homes – and a look at a secluded beach that was the site of the first surfing craze. “You can see the most beautiful people sun bathing here,” quipped our guide. “And competition for the waves here is always a challenge for the surfing crowd,” he continued. “Brawls have been known to break out on this seemingly idyllic slice of coastline.” The fresh salty sea air coupled with such breathtaking scenery dispelled any picture of angry surfers as the scene before us was exuded the tranquil splashing of whitecaps.

Our final ascent was to the top of Mt. Soledad, the highest point in La Jolla that encapsulates a stunning 360 view of the area. This mountain is also where Geisel resided as he wrote many of his popular books, including “The Cat in the Hat” and “How the Grinch Stole Christmas.” At the top is a memorial to fallen veterans where we gazed at their memorials giving silent gratitude for their service in keeping our freedoms secure in order for us to enjoy a day such as this.

After working up an appetite it was time for lunch at the award winning A.R.Valentien at the Lodge at Torrey Pine. The Torrey Pine is rare tree that grows wild along the local stretch of the San Diego coastline has become the symbol associated with the Lodge and the premier municipal golf course where many come to watch the many world class golf tournaments or a round of golf.

The original 74 room inn was built in 1961, but in 2000 the hotel was demolished and reopened as the Lodge at Torrey Pines resembling the 1900’s California craftsman movement with lots of dark wood, tiffany style lamps and a well established art collection including the work of the namesake, A.R. Valentien. Known for his California botanical water color paintings the Lodge pays homage to a man who produced hundreds of detailed paintings and exquisite pottery.
The Lodge at Torrey pines offers 170 luxury hotel rooms including two restaurants, lounges, full service spa, outdoor recreation areas, including pool and fitness center. Today we were going to lunch overlooking the 18th hole of this iconic gorgeous green space. Chef Jeff Jackson seasonally inspired menu captures the true essence of the local farmer’s, small growers, ranchers and fishermen that labor to produce some of the freshest and delectable ingredients available.

The day offered dazzling sunshine that sparkled like glittering diamonds across the swimming pool that lie just below the outdoor dining area. As we settled into our scenic seating, our appetites were primed for a meal that is lauded as one of the best of the coast. Starting out with the Ahi Tuna Crudo garnished with fresh cucumber, spring onion, radish, mint and Vadouvan yogurt harmoniously paired with the Tablas Creek Vermentino the stage was set for an exceptional culinary journey. It reminded us of a friend who mentioned about how much she enjoyed the private dining experience, having visited something similar to pubs with private dining rooms cheshire, as it gives a totally different outlook on the eating out experience and makes it much more exclusive and somewhere you can eat in style.

The specialty dish of smoked trout, roasted beets, sugar snap peas, crushed hazelnuts, pickled mustard seeds accompanied by a zip of horseradish crème fraiche was indeed another delightful dish on this dining excursion. Chef Jackson’s alchemic blend of the best ingredients has put this restaurant into the must dine category for anyone wanting a true So.Cal farm to table dining experience.

As the sun started to set over the hilly landscape, we took a stroll along the famous greens as a way to unwind and take in the scenery. The Lodge at Torrey Pines will arrange for a guided nature walk to the nearby Torrey Pines State Natural Reserve upon request, but anyone can venture off on the many hiking trails and it’s dramatic cliff-top setting. Filling our senses with sunshine and stunning vistas, it was time to returning to the PanTai where we enquired on the local’s favorite dining spot and Georges’at the Cove situated close to the hotel was the recommendation.

La Jolla’s dining scene is a mix of long established fine dining restaurants mixed with newer venues featuring everything from California coastal to vegan. There literally is a dish for everyone to enjoy. Chef Trey Foshee is at the helm of the historical Georges at the Cove. The décor is traditional chic California accented by floor to ceiling windows overlooking the cove and Pacific Ocean. Chef Trey calls his menu California Modern an ever-changing menu of creative regional cuisine utilizing the area’s seasonally-driven produce and proteins. George’s also features the lounge-style Level2 bar and rooftop Ocean Terrace.

We started with Beef Tartare, levain crisp, mustard-fennel kraut, horseradish, pickled shallot and fines herbs and followed that up with a very fresh Snapper Crudo with local melons, charred cucumber, coconut, lemon verbena, and jalapeño. Looking over the menu our eyes met on one delicacy that we just had to experience. Our server must have read our mind. He gleefully arrive tableside with a perfectly seared Hudson Valley Foie Gras highlighted by preserved citrus-fennel marmalade, persimmon, brioche and almond to accent this very flavorful dish.

Settling on a wine pairing we prepared for what would become an epic seaside experience as the sun began to sink below the horizon. With aromas of the pacific tantalizing our nose, a Baja Striped Bass appeared on our plates. Beautifully plated with sunchokes, wild mushroom ravioli, egg yolk, sunflower seed pesto and chevri, this gift from the sea started off our entrée courses just right. Georges at the Cove not only features delights from the Pacific Ocean but from the land as well. Red Wine Braised Beef Cheeks with potato-horseradish puree, pickled cabbage, puffed beef tendon, mustard seeds, carrot and spring onion provided a rich, decadent gastronomic experience not to be soon forgotten.

For the grand FINI, Yuzu Semifreddo, Asian pear, white pomegranate, lime meringue, and white chocolate along with a sumptuous Ewenique, sheep, gouda, sweet vanilla and salted caramel from the nearby Central Coast Creamery was a magnificent way to end our evening at this renown coastal dining venue.

Great food and fresh sea air were the perfect elixir for a good night’s rest, and today we were moving into another lovely venue. When in La Jolla one must enjoy the best. Our accommodations at Hotel La Jolla-Curio Collection by Hilton were breathtaking. This beachy boutique hideaway is romantic and cosmopolitan offering many amenities to be enjoyed.

With only 108 guestrooms you feel cozy in your spacious guest room or venture out the Hiatus poolside lounge, work out in their fitness center and best off all have cocktails at Cusp rooftop restaurant on the 11th floor, featuring a seasonally-inspired menu and spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean.

Settled into our new quarters, it was now time for some sea adventure with the La Jolla Kayak Tour of La Jolla Cove. This company specializes in guided kayak and snorkeling tours that depart daily from the La Jolla Shores. The La Jolla is known for their seven sea caves and today we were going to paddle our way along the coast for a closer look at a sea cave and the teeming marine life that reside in these protected waters. We climbed aboard our bright yellow ocean kayak as sea spray and rollicking waves ushered us into the big blue ocean. We wanted to see the orange Garibaldi fish (California’s state fish) since we were told was that this unique fish was immortalized as the mischievous fish in Seuss’s “Cat in the Hat”.

Just as we approached the sea cave, the orange fish were in abundance just below our splashing paddles, looking like undulating orange dots of color in the wavy water. Along the coast sea lions basked in the sun drench craggy banks oblivious to the many gawking kayakers. We carefully made our way through the cave, our voices echoing off the narrow rocky walls as dappled sunlight filtered between the hallowed rock formations. Gingerly we made our way back out and journeyed back, enjoying the refreshing air and the splashy sea spray. Bobbing like a cork, we somehow managed to navigated back to dry land, although we were soaked and needing dry clothes, and some more great California cuisine. Today we were going to head over to another local favorite, the Marine Room.

Keeping in step with exploring San Diego landmarks, The Marine Room fit the bill for our last night in this beachy utopia. Famous for its dramatic on-the-surf location and award-winning global cuisine, the Marine room has been wowing diners for over 75 years. Executive Chef Bernard Guilla’s expertise was about to be seen as we took our seats in awe of ocean waves breaking, white froth and all against the wall to ceiling windows just feet from our table. First order of dining business this evening would be in choosing a fine from their very large and carefully crafted wine list. Their Sommelier excitedly offered to pair our meal with a variety of wines and liqueurs. That is an offer we could not refuse. We leaned back in our chairs and let him and Chef Bernard “drive culinary the bus”.

Our first course proved to be an excellent way to start off the evening. Chef presented a Fennel Pollen Roasted Maine Diver Scallop and Foie Grais that was a treat for our eyes and our palate. This dish featuring kabocha purée, kumquat confit, pain d’ épice and sortilege liqueur was impressive and creative, culminating in layers of flavors. The staring entrée, Sea Salt Crispy Skin Branzino rubbed in bacon brioche spice, crab meat, parsnip, rouille and corail sauce was prepared to perfection. Of course if Lobster in your thing, dive into the Absinthe Butter Basted Lobster Tail with cumin gouda polenta, smoked onion sausage, mint medley and pyrat xo rum sauce! To finish off this Oceanside gastronomic evening, the signature Spindrift Cobblestone Pie with espresso and vanilla ice cream, toasted hazelnuts and maker’s mark bourbon sauce adds to a nice ending to a beautiful day in La Jolla.

“You have brains in your head. You have feet in your shoes. You can steer yourself in any direction you choose,” stated Dr. Seuss and with that is mind, we suggest that everyone takes time to steer themselves in the direction of La Jolla a place where magical memories can be experienced anytime of the year. We certainly came to that conclusion and we believe you will too.

I often come across Coach bags, both vintage and newer, in my thrifting and bargaining travels. Most of the time it’s fairly easy to find out the model name of the bag by using the last numbers on the interior serial along with the search word, “Coach.” But sometimes, as with older bags, I can get nearly stumped. Especially if they’re rarer and harder to find. Such was the case with the above bag. I could not find the ” number on the internet for the life of me. And then I came across a website that helped me decipher what make of bag it really was. By using the following tricks, I figured out that it was made in 1991, and so when I Googled “Coach 1991,” ta-dah, there it was, a Coach Binocular bag. Here are the clues given by

The serial number can be decoded on any Coach bag made from 1994 on. The first letter is the month, in order from A for January, all the way through M for December, skipping I for clarity because I was too easy to mistake for 1. The second number is the year the bag was made, 4 for 1994, 3 for 2003, and 04 for 2004, with double numbers being used for every year after 2004. The third or fourth number in the creed is the factory designation number. I don’t think Coach has ever released a list of these numbers and what they stand for to the public.

Notice that underneath the word Coach, it says “LEATHERWARE” in tiny block letters. The tag from this bag will also say “LEATHERWARE” underneath. This bag dates anytime prior to 1994, and after the implementation of the creed stamp in the 1970’s.

If you go to the website you can see some examples to help you practice deciphering them better. They also provide a list with a lot of the model numbers and names:

Canadian telecoms regulator's latest ruling spells ⟚rk period' for smaller operators

Two recent decisions by Canada's telecom regulator are freezing out competition in the country's highly concentrated industry, critics argue, making it even harder to bring down prices for mobile and internet service. For years, Canadian consumers have complained about high cellular bills, which rank among the steepest in the world, and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau's Liberal government has threatened to take action if the providers failed to cut bills by 25%. On Thursday the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) ruled that it would not significantly lower the rates that small companies must pay to access the high-speed broadband networks of larger rivals, including BCE Inc, Telus Corp and Rogers Communications Inc, known as the Big Three.

Ontario principal removed after twice wearing hair of Black student like a wig

A school board in London, Ont., has removed a high school principal from his position after video surfaced on social media of him wearing the hair of a Black student as if it were a wig. A student who spoke to CBC News said the principal also wore the hair a second time six months after the first incident as part of a Halloween costume. The Conseil scolaire catholique Providence (CSC), the board that oversees francophone Catholic schools in southwestern Ontario, announced on Saturday that Luc Chartrand has been "immediately removed . from his current position." Chartrand was principal at Monseigneur-Bruyère, a French-language Catholic high school in north London. In an emailed statement that came in response to calls for comment from CBC News, CSC director general Joseph Picard said: "We strongly condemn this type of behaviour and maintain a zero-tolerance policy toward any racism, discrimination or the appearance thereof." Chartrand did not respond to a request for comment from CBC News. The move comes in response to two incidents that occurred in 2019, but they only came to light Friday evening when the London branch of Black Lives Matter posted a video on its Instagram account. The four-second video shows Chartrand during a school assembly that was being held as a fundraiser for a student who was battling cancer. Students were shaving their heads to support the student and to raise money for her. This still image shared Friday on Black Lives Matter London's Instagram page shows high school principal Luc Chartrand wearing hair recently shorn from a student as a wig. The school board announced Friday that Chartrand has been removed from his position.(Black Lives Matter London/Instagram) CBC News has spoken with two students who were in the gym that day and who verified the contents of the video. CBC News has agreed not to name the students for privacy reasons. One of the students whose hair was shorn that day is Black and had long dreadlocks. In the video, Chartrand is seen putting a clump of the shaved student's hair on his own head, and he then begins to flaunt for the crowd. A former student said Chartrand wore the hair at school a second time six months later, at Halloween, as part of a costume that included a basketball jersey in an apparent attempt to dress up like the student who had his hair shorn. The student plays basketball. A former student whom CBC News has agreed not to name for privacy reasons said the two incidents left many students at the school disgusted and offended. "It bothers me racially, because dreadlocks are so important to my culture," said the student, who is Black. The student said it was inappropriate for Chartrand to keep the hair, only to wear it again at Halloween. The student who had cancer died in August of that year. ➫solutely wrong' Alexandra Kane, a spokesperson for Black Lives Matter London, said the video raises all kinds of red flags. "There are levels of cultural appropriation here," Kane said. "You can see he puts the hair on and he starts being ɻlack' with his body movements and his actions. It is absolutely wrong. Our clothes, our hair, our skin, is not a costume for you to wear and parade around." Kane said the student may have felt compelled to let Chartrand use the hair in this way, given that he was an authority figure. Alexandra Kane, a spokesperson for Black Lives Matter London, says a white principal wearing the hair of a Black student as part of a costume raises serious problems. 'There are levels of cultural appropriation here,' Kane said.(Andrew Lupton/CBC) "Even if the student gave permission for this to happen, it's not OK to put that kind of pressure on a student," she said. "It's not OK to say, 'I'm going to be you for Halloween' as a white man. It's like you're mocking him." Since posting the video, Kane said she's been contacted by current and former Monseigneur-Bruyère students. She said many are questioning why Chartrand's actions are only surfacing and being addressed by the board now, two years after the first incident in the gym. The student who confirmed the contents of the video also shared with CBC News a letter sent to the school board in June 2020 demanding changes at the school to create a better climate for Black students. The student said the letter was partly in response to Chartrand's actions the previous Halloween but also in response to other incidents at the school and the murder of George Floyd by a Minneapolis police officer a month earlier. The student said she received no response from the board. Kane said she's heard similar stories from students who've spoken out since the photo of Chartrand was posted Friday. "The school board was aware of the situation when it happened," she said. "The students sent a petition to the school board and they did nothing. I hope they do more to eradicate racism in their own board. They need to find out where the problems are." 'I left for the same reasons' News of the principal's behaviour hit a nerve with Arielle Kayabaga, a London city councillor. She attended Monseigneur-Bruyère when she was in high school but transferred to another school before graduation over what she said was a climate of racism at the school. Arielle Kayabaga, a London city councillor, attended Monseigneur-Bruyère in high school, but said she transferred to another school before graduating due to what she called a climate of racism at the school.(Andrew Lupton/CBC) "I left for the same reasons. I just felt there was discriminations happening towards people of colour," she said. "The racism I experienced at that school made me want to switch schools, and that was 10 years ago. 'You can't even go outside': Alberta's Pigeon Lake overrun with midges

In Alberta's Pigeon Lake, cabins and cars are blanketed in quivering clumps. The midges have taken over in swarms of almost biblical proportions and unlike anything some longtime residents say they've ever seen. "You can't even go outside," said Allan Eliasson, who said the non-biting midges are the largest seasonal swarms he has seen in his two decades living near the central Alberta hamlet of Mulhurst. "It's just so annoying out there. It's overwhelming. It's like a horror movie out there." Albertans looking to get away to a lakeside cabin or camping spot might be in for a rude surprise. Lake flies are hatching en masse around Pigeon Lake, about 100 kilometres southwest of Edmonton this week. The insect invasion may be a nuisance for some on a summer-like weekend, but others see it as a stunning natural phenomenon. With over 2,000 species in North America and over 600 in the Edmonton area alone, the symphony of midges is a sweet sound to an entomologist's ear. "This is wonderful opportunity to see what great biodiversity we have," said Janet Sperling, entomologist and postdoctoral researcher at the University of Alberta. Entomologist Janet Sperling says the midges are a sign of a healthy lake.(Submitted by Janet Sperling) The adults live for only a few days, dying shortly after mating. The swarming, which started about 10 days ago, will not likely last for much longer. Most residents just call these non-biting midges annoying. But Sperling, who expects the swarms to die off in the coming days, hopes they might attract more curiosity than contempt. She says it's likely spring conditions were primed for the insects to surface from the lake en masse. The insects drive the local ecosystem, feeding fish and birds with their abundance a sign of a healthy lake, Sperling added. "It's just basically showing us that it's a clean lake," Sperling said. "And I'm not sure if you can hear all the birds but the birds that eat insects are just having a great time. They just open their mouth, fly along and they've got themselves a whole collection of insects to eat. "Some people go to the Serengeti and they want to see zebras and wildebeest," Sperling added. "But as an entomologist I don't have to go anywhere, I just have to go into my own backyard and see this incredible number of non-biting midges." Eggs are laid on the lake top with larvae feeding on tiny lake bed particles over the winter. Sperling says the size of this spring swarm is likely a matter of timing, with conditions rife for pupae to emerge over a few days, rather than several weeks. With insect appreciation day on June 8, Sperling says she hopes what might at first glance appear nightmarish, could inspire dreams of entomology for the next generation of curious insect appreciators.

Tennis-Osaka fined for media boycott, could face expulsion from French Open

Japan's Naomi Osaka could be thrown out of the French Open if she continues to boycott post-match news conferences at the tournament, the board of Grand Slam tennis tournaments said on Sunday. Osaka, who was fined 15,000 dollars for skipping the news conference after her first-round victory at Roland Garros, could also face suspension from other Grand Slam tournaments, the board added. The four-times Grand Slam champion said earlier this week she would not face the media during the French Open, citing mental health reasons.

In Mexico, cartels are hunting down police at their homes

MEXICO CITY (AP) — The notoriously violent Jalisco cartel has responded to Mexico’s “hugs, not bullets” policy with a policy of its own: The cartel kidnapped several members of an elite police force in the state of Guanajuato, tortured them to obtain names and addresses of fellow officers and is now hunting down and killing police at their homes, on their days off, in front of their families. It is a type of direct attack on officers seldom seen outside of the most gang-plagued nations of Central America and poses the most direct challenge yet to President Andrés Manuel López Obrador's policy of avoiding violence and rejecting any war on the cartels. But the cartel has already declared war on the government, aiming to eradicate an elite state force known as the Tactical Group which the gang accuses of treating its members unfairly. “If you want war, you'll get a war. We have already shown that we know where you are. We are coming for all of you,” reads a professionally printed banner signed by the cartel and hung on a building in Guanajuato in May. “For each member of our firm (CJNG) that you arrest, we are going to kill two of your Tacticals, wherever they are, at their homes, in their patrol vehicles,” the banner read, referring to the cartel by its Spanish initials. Officials in Guanajuato — Mexico's most violent state, where Jalisco is fighting local gangs backed by the rival Sinaloa cartel — refused to comment on how many members of the elite group have been murdered so far. But state police publicly acknowledged the latest case, an officer who was kidnapped from his home on Thursday, killed and his body dumped on a highway. Guanajuato-based security analyst David Saucedo said there have been many cases. “A lot of them (officers) have decided to desert. They took their families, abandoned their homes and they are fleeing and in hiding,” Saucedo said. “The CJNG is hunting the elite police force of Guanajuato.” Numbers of victims are hard to come by, but Poplab, a news cooperative in Guanajuato, said at least seven police officers have been killed on their days off so far this year. In January, gunmen went to the home of a female state police officer, killed her husband, dragged her away, tortured her and dumped her bullet-ridden body. Guanajuato has had the highest number of police killed of any Mexican state since at least 2018, according to Poplab. Between 2018 and May 12, a total of 262 police have been killed, or an average of about 75 officers each year — more than are killed by gunfire or other assaults on average each year in the entire United States, which has 50 times Guanajuato’s population. The problem in Guanajuato has gotten so bad that the state government published a special decree on May 17 to provide an unspecified amount of funding for protection mechanisms for police and prison officials. “Unfortunately, organized crime groups have shown up at the homes of police officers, which poses a threat and a greater risk of loss of life, not just for them, but for members of their families,” according to the decree. “They have been forced to quickly leave their homes and move, so that organized crimes groups cannot find them,” it reads. State officials refused to describe the protection measures, or comment on whether officers were to be paid to rent new homes, or if there were plans to construct special secure housing compounds for them and their families. “This is an open war against the security forces of the state government,” Saucedo noted. López Obrador campaigned on trying to deescalate the drug conflict, describing a “hugs, not bullets” approach to tackle the root causes of crime. Since taking office in late 2018, he has avoided openly confronting cartels, and even released one capo to avoid bloodshed, saying he preferred a long-range policy of addressing social problems like youth unemployment that contribute to gang membership. But former U.S. Ambassador Christopher Landau said in April that López Obrador views the fight against drug cartels “as a distraction . So he has basically adopted an agenda of a pretty laissez-faire attitude towards them, which is pretty troubling to our government, obviously.” Mark Stevenson, The Associated Press

Grizzly that killed Alberta woman captured, will be euthanized

Alberta Fish and Wildlife says it has captured and will euthanize a grizzly that killed a woman near Water Valley last week. A 68-year-old woman was killed in a bear attack on Tuesday on her property near Water Valley, which is in Mountain View County, about 80 kilometres northwest of Calgary. Fish and wildlife officers said a grizzly sow seen in the area had been exhibiting aggressive behaviour. On Saturday, fish and wildlife officers captured two large female grizzlies near the site of the attack. One of the bears was lactating but did not appear to be actively nursing, and was not accompanied by cubs. The other bear was older, with extremely worn teeth. Officers took DNA samples from both bears, which confirmed the older grizzly was responsible for the fatal attack. The DNA tests concluded neither bear was involved in another fatal grizzly attack, which killed a man out for a run in the Waiparous Village area earlier in the month. Fish and wildlife said the bear that killed the woman will be euthanized on Saturday, in accordance with the province's guide to managing human and bear interactions. "This decision is never made lightly, and when it is made, it is to prevent more attacks by that particular bear. The second bear will be released at a to-be-determined location. All traps will be removed from the area," the province said. Fish and wildlife said that due to an unusually high number of bears still in the area, residents are being asked to continue to be cautious. Experts say fatal bear attacks are very rare incidents, and one bear biologist based in Canmore said it is "far more likely to have an encounter with a bear where nothing happens." What to do if you encounter a bear Alberta Fish and Wildlife said anyone who encounters a bear in the wild should follow these steps: Stay calm and do not run. Stay with your group and keep children close. Back away if you see cubs or an animal carcass. The bear will want to protect them. Prepare to defend yourself with bear spray. Back away, leaving the way you came. Keep your eye on the bear without staring at it aggressively. Look for a place to hide, such as a car or building. Speak to the bear in a soft, low voice. Let the bear know that you are human and not prey. Bear sightings can be reported to Alberta's 24/7 report a poacher line at 1-800-642-3800.

As pandemic wanes, Florida's DeSantis seizes national stage

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) — As Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis struggled to contain the coronavirus pandemic, Democrats readied to pounce. The state's economy was in tatters, infections and deaths were on the rise and there were doubts about the Republican's plan to lead Florida out of crisis. Now that the pandemic appears to be waning and DeSantis is heading into his reelection campaign next year, he has emerged from the political uncertainty as one of the most prominent Republican governors and an early White House front-runner in 2024 among Donald Trump's acolytes, if the former president doesn't run again. As DeSantis' national stature has risen, he has remained defiant in the face of continued attacks on his hard-line opposition to mask mandates and lockdowns. “Hold the line. Don’t back down,” he told a crowd at a party fundraiser in Pittsburgh on May 20. “And in the state of Florida, with me as governor, I have only begun to fight.” That fight will happen soon, as he campaigns for a second term and pressure builds on Florida Democrats to regain their footing in a state that has swung toward Republicans for several election cycles. Unless they find a new formula, Democrats could find themselves shut out of statewide office for the first time since Reconstruction. “This isn’t just one race — this is two races in one, given how Ron DeSantis is trying to use a reelection win as a slingshot to then be the odds on favorite" for the GOP nomination in 2024, said Fernand Amandi, a Democratic pollster in Miami. “If they manage to prevent him from getting reelected, they almost certainly eliminate any possibility of him running for president.” DeSantis won in a nail-biter three years ago against Democrat Andrew Gillum, and Democrats worry whether they can field a candidate able to win back the governor’s mansion for the first time since 1994. U.S. Rep. Charlie Crist, a former Republican governor who is now a Democrat, announced his campaign for governor this month. Agriculture Commissioner Nikki Fried, the only Democrat currently holding statewide office, has teased a June 1 date to publicly announce whether she will run. Some Democrats had hoped U.S. Rep. Val Demings, who helped manage the first Trump impeachment and was considered as President Joe Biden's running mate, would join the race. Instead, she is considering a run for the U.S. Senate seat now held by Republican Marco Rubio. Regardless of who gets in the Democratic contest, toppling DeSantis will be “a tall order,” said Ryan Tyson, a Tallahassee-based Republican pollster. “The Democrats fail to understand that the state of Florida is changing under their very noses.” Florida’s population continues to boom, but many of the state’s new residents are older and come from parts of the country friendlier toward Republicans. Before last November’s presidential election, Republicans had narrowed the registration gap with Democrats to about 117,000. On Election Day four years earlier, Democrats had a 327,000 voter registration lead. Since then, Republicans have continued to gain — with the Democratic advantage now barely over 100,000. Both sides will try to nationalize the race, partly to draw support from big-money donors from outside the state. For DeSantis, it’s also about raising his national profile. That of course, probably will become a line of attack for Crist and Fried, who accuse DeSantis of being more interested in pursuing his political ambitions than in tackling the concerns of Floridians. “Just like our former president, he always takes credit but never takes responsibility,” Crist said when he announced his bid for governor. In a video hinting at her possible entry into the race, Fried called DeSantis an “authoritarian dictator.” Appealing to Trump supporters might be smart as the Republican Party deepens its allegiance to the former president, whose shadow will no doubt loom over high-profile races like the one about to unfold in Florida. During his Pittsburgh visit, DeSantis applauded Trump for recognizing the military and economic threats posed by China and sympathized with him over his battles against social media companies such as Twitter, which banned him from its platform. The governor is “definitely made efforts to to appeal to the Trump base. The disadvantage to that, of course, is that the former president is so polarizing,” said Kevin Wagner, a political scientist at Florida Atlantic University. ”But in the state of Florida, where the former president did really well, appealing to his base of voters seems like a pretty prudent move.” DeSantis’ ambitions could become muddled if Trump runs in 2024. That would force DeSantis and other hopefuls to wait it out or begin redefining themselves beyond Trump's shadow. Democrats thought the pandemic would be a strong line of attack against DeSantis. In November, Floridians were about evenly divided about the governor's handling of the pandemic, with 49% approving and 50% disapproving, according to AP VoteCast. In that same poll, 48% had a favorable opinion of DeSantis while 45% viewed him unfavorably. But with about 18 months before the November 2022 election, it remains to be seen how the pandemic might play out in the campaign. The pandemic has become a key talking point against what DeSantis called “the militant left.” “We’ve saved millions of livelihoods from the brunt of lockdowns," he said in Pittsburgh. "All I can say to any state that has not followed suit: Open your state, open your schools, take off these mask mandates, let people live and thrive.” While he spent his first years as Florida governor casting himself as a defender of the environment, including the state’s cherished Everglades and imperiled coastlines, and even as a booster for his state’s underpaid teachers, DeSantis has more recently taken a sharper turn to the right. During Florida’s just-completed legislative session, DeSantis successfully pushed for an “anti-riot” law that countered the Black Lives Matter movement. He won legislation that excoriated social media companies that, the governor charged, censor conservative thought. On a recent appearance on Fox News — one of many — DeSantis showcased a freshly signed law that tightens voting rules amid unproven claims among Trump followers that Trump was denied a second term because of election irregularities. “The governor’s priorities certainly got through, and that can only be good for him,” said Susie Wiles, a Republican strategist who helped Trump win Florida last year and continues to work for him. “What is good for him has proven to be good for the state, which in turn makes his fortunes good going into reelection next year.” ___ Associated Press writer Hannah Fingerhut in Washington contributed to this report. Tuchel finally meets Abramovich, with the European Cup

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — Bursting back into the Estádio do Dragão dressing room dressing spraying bubbly from a bottle over his squad, Thomas Tuchel unleashed his emotions. Losing Champions League finalist last season. Fired by Paris Saint-Germain in December. A Champions League winner six months later with Chelsea. What a whirlwind year it's been for the German manager. Little wonder he's not so easy to meet his own boss. It took 123 days from his hiring by Chelsea to meet Roman Abramovich. It was timed to perfection — after beating Manchester City 1-0 in the Champions League final on Saturday night. “It was the best moment for the first meeting,” Tuchel said, “because now on it can only get worse. We will speak tomorrow." There's a contract to talk about. Managers at Chelsea aren't known for their longevity. Not even saved by his status as a club playing great, Lampard lasted only 18 months. Tuchel only got an 18-month contract from Abramovich. “I think we are pragmatic in our choices,” the Russian billionaire told Forbes magazine in March. “And we are comfortable making the right changes at the right time to ensure we can achieve our long-term ambitions." The ambitions when Tuchel arrived seemed to be more modest — just return Chelsea to the top-four. Champions League qualification was sealed on Sunday despite a season-ending Premier League defeat to Aston Villa. But there was also the setback of losing the FA Cup final to Leicester the previous week. Tuchel was saved in his 30th match in charge by the club's record-signing from the summer transfer window as $90 million-plus attacking midfielder Kai Havertz scored the only goal in Porto. It sealed Chelsea's second Champions League title with echoes of the 2012 triumph that was also overseen by a mid-season appointee. Tuchel will be hoping to last longer then Roberto Di Matteo who was fired by Abramovich six months later. “I can assure him that I will stay hungry, that I want the next title and I feel absolutely happy, as a part of a really ambitious club, a strong part of a strong group," Tuchel said. "That suits my belief and my passion about football in the moment perfectly. So my desire is to go for more victories, to grow as a coach and to push the group on the first day of the next season to the limit. “We have work to do to close the gap, and this is what I’m all about. And so it will be nice to meet him a bit closer." ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports Rob Harris, The Associated Press

Squamish husband and wife who died hours apart from COVID-19 honoured at truck rally

Two long-term residents of Squamish, B.C., who recently died hours apart of COVID-19 were honoured at a truck rally on Saturday. Margaret (Gail) Ross and Harvey (Merrill) Ross died 17 hours apart on May 5 and 6, respectively, of complications from COVID-19 after a month-long battle with the disease, according to their obituary. Merrill was 76 and Gail was 73. "This is not the way Merrill and Gail's story was supposed to end," said JR Transport owner Darren Doak, who organized the rally. "I miss them every day." Beginning at 2 p.m. Saturday, Doak says, thousands of locals came out to watch about 90 trucks meander through Squamish and onto the Sea-to-Sky Highway. Hard worker and team mom Doak says he had known Merrill for 50 years from their shared careers in the trucking and logging industry. According to their obituary, Gail and Merrill Doak were married for 54 years and had moved to Squamish from Montague, P.E.I, in 1969. Merrill was known to many for his "old-school work ethic." "Merrill was an extremely hard worker, whether he was going to work for five minutes, one load, or whether it was going to be a 15-hour day," Doak said, adding that Merrill worked right up until he became ill. His wife, Gail, was known in town as "the ultimate team mom" who volunteered with hockey, soccer, baseball and ringette youth teams in the community. She often travelled with her husband on his trips. Doak says the couple were sent to the Lions Gate Hospital in North Vancouver shortly after they fell ill. He doesn't know if they had been vaccinated against COVID-19. The pair leave behind four children and seven grandchildren.

Ukrainian ambassador in Thailand dies on resort island

'Too much British cheese'? U.K. PM Boris Johnson on trade, climate co-operation

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson is hopeful that Canada and the U.K. can conclude a permanent deal on how much British cheese can enter Canada, just one part of a comprehensive free-trade deal set to be negotiated this fall. Reluctance to "allow too much British cheese to tempt the palates of Canadians" was one sticking point during negotiations over a transitional deal last year, Johnson told CBC News chief political correspondent Rosemary Barton in an exclusive Canadian interview airing Sunday on Rosemary Barton Live. "What's really needed now is more affordable, high-quality British cheese in Canada, and I hope that we can do a deal to allow that," Johnson said. Canada and the United Kingdom completed a transitional trade agreement in November, necessitated by Britain's withdrawal from the European Union. But the agreement did not include a lasting deal on market access for British cheese producers, instead temporarily maintaining the system established under Canada's free-trade agreement with the European Union. Johnson speaks with the CBC's Barton on Friday from 10 Downing Street in London, his official residence.(Adrian Di Virgilio/CBC) Access to Canada's supply-managed dairy market has been a controversial issue in a slew of trade agreements concluded by the federal government in recent years, including the United States-Mexico-Canada Agreement and the Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement between Canada and the European Union. "We were very concerned that dairy might be implicated in that, but we are pleased to see that the government has excluded dairy imports in that particular trade agreement. Now we know that it's an interim agreement that is renewed in three years. That gives them time to negotiate," Dairy Farmers of Canada vice-president David Wiens said after the Canada-U.K. deal was signed in November 2020. Around the same time, an adviser for the National Farmers' Union in Britain said that "a U.K. priority in these negotiations should be to secure greater access for our cheese producers." Johnson pointed to his procurement of Canadian-made "big burly bicycles" — referring to Montreal-based Bixi bikes — when he was mayor of London as proof of his free-trade bona fides. 'We were the beginners of the crime' The prime minister also discussed the issue of co-operation in the fight against climate change, noting he was pleased with Canada's emissions reductions targets, but "I'm not saying you couldn't go further." The U.K. has an aggressive emissions reduction target for 2030 of 68 per cent below 1990 levels, compared with Canada's lower target of between 40 and 45 per cent below 2005 levels. Johnson highlighted a push by his government to secure $100 billion US per year from rich countries to direct toward climate action in developing nations. "After all, we in the U.K., I'm afraid to say we were the first. We were the beginners of the crime," Johnson said, referring to Britain's early industrialization and related hydrocarbon emissions. "We owe it to [developing countries] to support them now in accelerating their move to net-zero. It's not fair otherwise, and I think Justin [Trudeau] totally gets that," he said. Johnson repeatedly said his government and that of Trudeau were in "harmony" on the issue of climate change. 'Hooked on a Feeling' singer B.J. Thomas dies at 78

B.J. Thomas, the Grammy-winning singer who enjoyed success on the pop, country and gospel charts with such hits as “I Just Can’t Help Believing,” “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head” and “Hooked on a Feeling,” has died. He was 78. Thomas, who announced in March that he had been diagnosed with lung cancer, died from complications of the disease Saturday at his home in Arlington, Texas, his publicist Jeremy Westby said in a statement. A Hugo, Oklahoma-native who grew up in Houston, Billy Joe Thomas broke through in 1966 with a gospel-styled cover of Hank Williams’ “I’m So Lonesome I Could Cry” and went on to sell millions of records and have dozens of hits across genres. He reached No. 1 with pop, adult contemporary and country listeners in 1976 with ″(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song.” The same year, his “Home Where I Belong” became one of the first gospel albums to be certified platinum for selling more than 1 million copies. Dionne Warwick, who duetted with Thomas, sent out a tweet Saturday with her condolences. “My sincere condolences to the family of one of my favorite duet partners, BJ Thomas. I will miss him as I know so many others will as well. Rest In Peace my friend,” she said. Thomas' signature recording was “Raindrops Keep Fallin’ On My Head,” a No. 1 pop hit and an Oscar winner for best original song as part of the soundtrack to one of the biggest movies of 1969, the irreverent Western “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid.” Thomas wasn’t the first choice to perform the whimsical ballad composed by Burt Bacharach and Hal David Ray Stevens turned the songwriters down. But his warm, soulful tenor fit the song’s easygoing mood, immortalized on film during the scene when Butch (Paul Newman) shows off his new bicycle to Etta Place (Katharine Ross), the girlfriend of the Sundance Kid (Robert Redford). “Raindrops” has since been heard everywhere from “The Simpsons” to “Forrest Gump” and was voted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013. But, at first, not everyone was satisfied. Thomas was recovering from laryngitis while recording the soundtrack version and his vocals are raspier than for the track released on its own. Redford, meanwhile, doubted the song even belonged in “Butch Cassidy.” “When the film was released, I was highly critical — how did the song fit with the film? There was no rain,” Redford told USA Today in 2019. “At the time, it seemed like a dumb idea. How wrong I was.” Thomas would later say the phenomenon of “Raindrops” exacerbated an addiction to pills and alcohol which dated back to his teens, when a record producer in Houston suggested he take amphetamines to keep his energy up. He was touring and recording constantly and taking dozens of pills a day. By 1976, while ″(Hey Won’t You Play) Another Somebody Done Somebody Wrong Song” was hitting No. 1, he felt like he was “number 1,000.” “I was at the bottom with my addictions and my problems,” he said in 2020 on “The Debby Campbell Goodtime Show.” He cited a “spiritual awakening,” shared with his wife, Gloria Richardson, with helping him to get clean. Thomas had few pop hits after the mid-1970s, but he continued to score on the country charts with such No. 1 songs as “Whatever Happened to Old-Fashioned Love” and “New Looks from an Old Lover.” In the late 1970s and early ’80s, he was also a top gospel and inspirational singer, winning two Dove awards and five Grammys, including a Grammy in 1979 for best gospel performance for “The Lord’s Prayer.” Fans of the 1980s sitcom “Growing Pains” heard him as the singer of the show’s theme song. He also acted in a handful of movies, including “Jory” and “Jake’s Corner” and toured often. Recent recordings included “Living Room Music,” featuring cameos from Lyle Lovett, Vince Gill and Richard Marx. He had planned to record in 2020 in Muscle Shoals, Alabama, but the sessions were delayed because of the pandemic. Thomas married Richardson in 1968, and had three daughters: Paige, Nora and Erin. He and his wife worked on the 1982 memoir “In Tune: Finding How Good Life Can Be.” His book “Home Where I Belong” came out in 1978 and was co-authored by Jerry B. Jenkins, later famous for the million-selling “Left Behind” religious novels written with Tim LaHaye. Besides music, Thomas loved baseball as a kid and started calling himself B.J. because so many Little League teammates also were named Billy Joe. By his teens, he was singing in church and had joined a local rock band, the Triumphs, whom he would stay with into his 20s. He enjoyed Ernest Tubb, Hank Williams and other country performers his parents liked, but on his own he was inspired by the soul and rhythm and blues singers he heard on the radio or saw on stage, notably Jackie Wilson, whose hit ballad “To Be Loved” Thomas later covered and adopted as a kind of guide to his life. “I was raised in a fairly dysfunctional situation and I went through years of intense alcoholism and drug addiction so the song was always a touchstone for me. When you open yourself up to drugs and alcohol at such a young age it becomes something you have to deal with the rest of your life,” he told the Huffington Post in 2014. “What a road block and heartbreak and times of failure these addictions have caused me. But I had that little piece of lightning from that song. That’s the essence of the whole thing. To love and be loved. And that takes a lifetime to accomplish. It’s always been an important part of my emotions.” ___ This story has been corrected to show that Thomas sang the theme song to “Growing Pains,” not “The Facts of Life,” and to correct the spelling of Ernest Tubb's name. N’Golo Kante, the humble star close to winning it all

PORTO, Portugal (AP) — N’Golo Kante approached the winner’s podium and sized up the gleaming European Cup that was almost as big as him. The diminutive midfielder had seen jubilant teammates before him give the trophy a kiss as they walked by. Kante, a touch nervous maybe, gave it a little pat and shuffled on. Humble to the end, Kante moved a step closer to winning everything there is to win in football by adding the Champions League with Chelsea on Saturday. A Premier League winner in 2016 and ’17, with Leicester then Chelsea. A World Cup winner in 2018 with France. A Europa League winner in 2019. Now, a European champion. Win the European Championship with France across the next six weeks and Kante will have done the lot. All with that beaming smile on his face. Asked if Kante is the best player in the world, Chelsea captain Cesar Azpilicueta was in no doubt: “It’s straightforward, yes.” At the moment, it’s hard to argue. Kante was voted man of the match by UEFA’s technical observers in both legs of Chelsea’s semifinal against Real Madrid, and again in the 1-0 win over Manchester City in the final. He made 10 ball recoveries, more than any other player. He won all three tackles he attempted — including a key one to snuff out Kevin De Bruyne as he approached Chelsea’s box early in the second half. Then there were his surging runs forward, leading the counterattack. In a match where so much focus was on City manager Pep Guardiola’s decision to not play a specialist defensive midfielder, Kante produced a clinic in that position once again. “He does everything,” Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel said. “The energy he brings, I don’t know how many ball recoveries today. He covered so much ground. “It’s special to have him and when we don’t have him we missed him. After winning the World Cup, the Champions League, he’s so humble in his position.” Tuchel has said before that he was bestowed a gift when he arrived at Chelsea in January to be handed a squad containing Kante. “I think N’Golo fits into any manager’s plans on the planet,” said Tuchel, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Borussia Dortmund manager. “I was desperate to have him in my teams in the past.” Now he has him and is utilizing him perfectly. It will not be a surprise to see Kante voted the FIFA player of the year for the first time, especially if he helps France to win the Euros. He has already won the biggest personal award in English soccer, the PFA player of the year in 2016 on the back of Leicester’s title win. At Leicester, the story goes, he used to run to training while others arrived in their flashy cars and kept going to the same hairdresser, paying 10 pounds for a trim. That humble side of Kante hasn’t changed, even as he adds Champions League winner to his lengthy list of accomplishments. ___ More AP soccer: https://apnews.com/hub/soccer and https://twitter.com/AP_Sports ___ Steve Douglas is at https://twitter.com/sdouglas80 Steve Douglas, The Associated Press

Parents calling on Canada to evacuate children stuck in the Gaza Strip

OTTAWA — When Mahmoud Khalaf's wife and two children travelled from Canada to visit extended family in the Gaza Strip in April, they couldn't imagine they would end up stranded there during a deadly war between Israel and Hamas. Khalaf, an electrical engineer in London, Ont., said his wife took their five-year-old and two-year-old to visit family for the first time in seven years and wound up living through the horrors of the bombardment of Gaza. "They have never experienced something like that," he said. "For my kids, it was something very difficult and hard to understand what's going on, especially coming from an environment where they never felt like they might die." Last week, a ceasefire ended the 11-day war that left hundreds of people dead and deteriorated Gaza's already weakened infrastructure. The Gaza Health Ministry said at least 230 Palestinians died, including 65 children. Twelve people in Israel, including a five-year-old and 16-year-old, were killed. Khalaf's wife and children are among dozens of Canadians currently in Gaza, which has been under blockade since 2007. The main point of exit is through Egypt, but only a limited number of people are allowed to leave at a time and they must apply weeks in advance. He and other Canadian residents with families in Gaza fear more bloodshed and are calling on the federal government to urgently help their loved ones evacuate. "As a government, they should be taking care of their people,” said Khalaf. “Right? I mean, that's the government's job." Global Affairs Canada didn't answer questions on whether the department is planning to evacuate Canadians from the Gaza Strip. Department spokeswoman Patricia Skinner said consular services are being provided through the Canadian representative office to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah. "Global Affairs Canada has been advising Canadians to avoid all travel to the Gaza Strip due to continuing conflict, the possible resumption of armed hostilities, and the difficulties to leave the area since October 2000," she said. There are 160 Canadians in the Gaza Strip currently registered in a federal database of Canadians abroad, but since registration is voluntary, the number is likely higher. Khalaf said his five-year-old son who was born in Canada couldn't understand the situation and the reasons behind the bombing in Gaza. "The questions come up: 'What's happening? Why is this happening? Is this happening in Canada? Is this happening everywhere, or is it just here?'" he said. He could hear the explosions when he called or FaceTimed his wife and kids, he said. "Sometimes it's really close. When it is close you see (my son) jumping, like he would be jumping from wherever he is right into his mom's arms just because he's terrified," he said. "That in itself, being so far away from them, was extremely difficult and extremely painful at the same time." The situation has also impacted asylum seekers and more recent immigrants whose families are still in Gaza. Abdallah Alhamadni received refugee status in December and works as an emergency responder with a medical transportation company in Mississauga, Ont., where he transfers people infected with COVID-19 from their homes or long-term care facilities to hospitals. He has applied for permanent residency for himself and his family members and has contacted the Immigration Department several times asking them to expedite the process, he said. "My family, they are under huge stress all the time (while) they are waiting," he said. Alhamadni is living in Canada with the daily risk of contracting COVID-19 and becoming very sick because he has chronic high blood pressure and diabetes, he said. Meanwhile, he fears for his children's lives in Gaza. "I was terrified something could happen to them, especially (with the bombardment of) houses very close to where they are living." Alhamadni and a group of parents with children in Gaza are working to bring attention to their situation. They have contacted the federal government and several Members of Parliament and will start a petition to ask for the evacuation of their families, he said. The government should give the families temporary visas while their permanent residency applications are being processed or fast-track the applications, Alhamadni said. He also contacted the Canadian representative office to the Palestinian Authority in Ramallah, which he said told him it would let him know if an evacuation of families is being planned. "There are no real promises they will bring them here to Canada,” he said. "We are lost. We don't know what to do." The Immigration Department did not say whether it planned to evacuate families of people living in Canada from the Gaza Strip. It said it was unable to comment on individual cases for privacy reasons but it is aware of the situation of resettled refugees' dependants who remain in Gaza and it is monitoring the situation. Global migration has been upended by the pandemic, but the department has prioritized urgent protection cases, vulnerable people and those performing essential services, it said. Sammar Mohammed is another member of the group of parents working to bring children to Canada. She has been living with her two daughters in Windsor, Ont., since 2019 while her husband and her two other daughters are still in Gaza. She is waiting for their permanent residency applications to be processed so the rest of her family can join her in Canada. "This is our issue and our pain — the long processing time," she said. Mohammed used to do video calls with her daughters, but now they either lose internet or power, she said. Her husband is a journalist with a local TV station whose building was destroyed in an Israeli airstrike, she added, and a classmate of her 13-year-old daughter was killed during the war. She said there are serious consequences for her loved ones as they continue to wait, especially with a fragile ceasefire that she believes could end at any moment. "If they survived this war, God knows what will happen during the next offences on Gaza." La Quinta Resort & Club Gets a Multi-Million Dollar Restoration - Recipes

When I lived in Massachusetts, I became quite familiar with little white rabbits decorated with blue flowers. I developed a bit of a collection, displaying them in my dining room at the time. Recently I’ve found a few pieces at garage sales and my local Goodwill which has prompted me to revisit this line of ceramics, curious because I knew some were more valuable than others. Turns out, there is vintage Dedham Pottery and then there are the new pieces made by the Potting Shed. Let’s start with the original history from Peekintheattic.com:

Hugh Robertson, a fifth generation potter, opened The Dedham Pottery Company in 1896 in Dedham, Massachusetts during the American arts and crafts movement. The company was a working pottery until 1943. During that time the pottery’s artisans created over fifty designs for their dinnerware and serving pieces. The most popular design was the endearing little bunny now known as “the Dedham rabbit.” The rabbit became the identifying signature of Dedham pottery and remains so today. Through the years, the “Dedham rabbit” has won an international following. Pieces or original Dedham pottery are highly przed by collectors, from individuals to prestigious institutions such as the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Massachusetts and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C.

Thirty years later, the Dedham line was revived (From harelooms.com):

In 1973, Chotsie Starr, who was already enjoying her ceramics hobby, decided to supplement her collection of original Dedham Pottery with self-made reproductions. Chotsie’s originality and craftsmanship, to her pleasant surprise, won acclaim from all who saw it. She soon found herself preoccupied with filling orders from family and friends who had seen her work and wanted pieces for their own use and enjoyment.

The more Chotsie’s work was seen, the more her reputation for fine craftsmanship grew. In 1975, Chotsie agreed to sell her reproductions through two local retail shops. That initiative confirmed her inner suspicion that the appeal of the Dedham Pottery patterns was not only timeless, it was also broad-based. By 1977, Chotsie sensed that she was onto something bigger than her cellar-based hobby could sustain. So, with her sons Chris and Rob and several local artisans, Chotsie founded The Potting Shed, Inc.

Since starting her adventure over 34 years ago, Chotsie has seen her hobby transformed, first into a fledgling company and, eventually, into a viable, nationally distributed and internationally respected enterprise. The customer base which started with family and friends visiting her cellar-based pottery has grown to thousands of people worldwide! The pottery, itself, quickly outgrew the cellar location and was relocated to a roomy old New England factory building in Concord, Massachusetts. The product line has grown from a relatively small selection of pieces to over three hundred items ranging from decoratively functional to functionally decorative. And, true to Chotsie’s original intent, each item is still produced with painstaking craftsmanship to ensure a faithfullness to the original Dedham Pottery and to produce products that will provide lasting value and enjoyment to the customer. Each year, new pieces and new patterns are introduced to respond to customers’ interests and to entice their imagination.

After an abundant life of 91 years, Chotsie passed away in May of 2012. Her son, Rob Starr, and a small group of gifted artisans dedicate their daily efforts to insuring that Chotsie’s endeavor to reinvigorate the Dedham Pottery tradition flourishes!

Normally Dedham Pottery is marked as such with that name and a rabbit as its mark. Potting Shed pieces generally have letters and numbers along an edge with “USA.” More on how to tell the more traditional and highly valuable Dedham Pottery from it’s newer versions (From Skinner.com):

Though made in the modern era, Dedham pottery is traditional in its design, resembling the look of antique Chinese export porcelain. It’s easily distinguished by its blue and white crackle glaze, and cobalt blue decorated borders, which feature a repeating pattern of animals, birds, fish, plants and flowers. Ironically, Robertson happened upon the crackle look accidentally, when experimenting with new glazes and cooling techniques, but since the design was a near-instant hit within the Arts & Crafts community, the look stuck, and it’s still drawing in collectors today.

Dedham’s most recognizable pattern is the Dedham Rabbit, which eventually became the firm’s logo, but they created dozens of other animal borders including elephant, polar bear, lion, dolphin, swan, owl, duck, chicken, turkey, Scottie dog, crab, lobster, turtle, and butterfly patterns. Plant and flower patterns included clover, magnolia, iris, horsechestnut, grape, orange tree, snow tree, water lily, and azalea borders.

Dedham’s designs were hand-painted, not stenciled, so pieces have a whimsical nature to them. Some decorators became well known for their beautiful work and even signed their wares. These pieces are highly collectible and often fetch top prices in today’s competitive collectibles market.

If you find a true piece of Dedham, you’re probably looking at a value in the hundreds of dollars rather than in the tens for Potting Shed, though both are very enjoyable display pieces.

Ausable Chasm Adventurers

We, the VCB girls, strongly feel that to really know what we are marketing and promoting every day, we must experience it firsthand. So every month, we set aside time to take a mini field trip to an attraction, lodging property and/or restaurant we have not experienced before and we experience it!!….I know, I know…hard work, right? (insert grin here)

So this month’s field trip was to Ausable Chasm’s Adventure Course…and the name definitely does not lie…side note, this course is not recommended for those with little coordination or for those who have a debilitating fear of heights! Although you are well educated beforehand and are safely strapped into the course at all times, I don’t recommend choosing that day to conquer your fears.

So let’s walk through the course…

1. Rope Ladder (Try jumping around a little and shaking the ladder…apparently it is way more fun for you than your friends that are also on the ladder with you. Hehe.)

Karen Billings, owner of Point Au Roche Lodge, reaching the top of the rope ladder

2. Uphill Zip Lining (hint: get a good push of the rock because the shorter distance you go, the more of an arm work out you get pulling yourself to the other side. We were all a bit sore the next day! But where else do you get to just hang out over a chasm?)

Me thinking I got an awesome push off the rock. and only ending up about 1/4 of the way down the line. Sigh.

3. Horizontal Rock Wall Climbing (This was the scariest part of the whole course for me! You are using wooden steps and metal rungs securely attached to the walls of the chasm to spider man it horizontally across to the next obstacle….not the most comfortable experience, but how awesome is that view?!)

Me forcing a smile as I am seriously panicking on the inside. why I thought getting a picture of the rocks and water below was a good idea at the time is beyond me!

4. Downhill Zip Lining (This was the absolute best one! You just got to float down the line, enjoy the view and not have to worry about a thing. The staff even caught you on the other side so you wouldn’t run straight into the rock wall.)

Amber Parliament getting ready to zip line. next Ausable Chasm brochure cover? I think so!

5. Rope Bridge/Pretty much a Tight Rope (Again, you are securely fastened into this course, but STILL balance is not my strong suit so thank goodness for the rope side rails!)

Karen having no fear as she crosses that rope bridge

6. Step Bridge/the last and final obstacle (funny story…right before we got to this course the staff said they thought this obstacle was just way too easy with 30+ steps, so they decided it would be much better to take out every other step and bring it down to 16 steps with gaps in between. Don’t they know my legs are short. but really, that view!)

Since we had the Premiere Package, we also got to experience the rafting down the river, which is a nice relaxer after being an extreme adventurer. I have to give props to the Chasm employee that was steering the boat who made it comical and informative all during one 20 minute trip. He explained the different rock formations and how they came to be, why some of the trees at the top of the Chasm walls grow towards the water instead of upwards (of course I cannot remember the scientific word…but it’s basically because the tree gets more light from the sun reflecting off of the water below then from the direct light from the sun above, so it grows down…how crazy?), how part of the chasm is located on a fault line (which by the way, just a few days later, experienced an earthquake and rock slide) AND how there was a 1911 movie filmed at the Chasm called “Black Chasm”.

Rafting through Ausable Chasm. those people in the picture? Visitors from Connecticut! When you work for the VISITORS BUREAU, you tend to get excited about that kind of stuff.

Funny story about this one too! One of the scenes required the horse and its rider to jump from the top of the chasm wall into the river below. Since they didn’t want their actor to get hurt they found someone in the neighboring town of Keeseville who was just crazy enough to go through with this stunt. The first few times around the horse was much smarter than the rider and halted at the edge of the chasm. After a few unsuccessful tries, the crew decided to blind fold the horse (not recommended!), which led to a successful jump off the edge but an unsuccessful ending for the rider. As the horse walked away without a scratch, the rider had a few broken limbs and only a few cents worth of pay to end the day. Black Chasm…1911 film made right in your own back yard…check it out!

The cliff the horse and rider jumped from in Black Chasm (1911)

After all that, we ended the day by just walking casually around the trails, enjoying the weather and changing scenery at every turn. So overall, the staff was amazing, the adventure was high level stuff and Ausable Chasm is just a gorgeous place for people of all ages and abilities to be!
