Watermelon Face Masks & Its Benefits

Everyone loves eating watermelon for the myriad of benefits it offers. Red, watery, fleshy, sweet, and refreshing, this fruit is not just good for health, but also for your skin and hair. Why is it that watermelon ranks among the top fruits recommended for skin care? Well, for starters, watermelon contains essential vitamins and nutrients, along with a special component called lycopene, which helps in removing free radicals from your skin, thus preventing skin damage.

You can consume watermelon on a daily basis to avail its amazing benefits or even include it in your skin & hair care routine in the form of face masks, cleansers, hair masks, or conditioner. But before we begin with the recipe to make one, here is a list of benefits watermelon offers and the important reasons why it deserves a place in your skincare routine.

Watermelon Masks

What has been your favorite watermelon masks from any beauty box? I want to buy one, but haven't tried any. I just love the smell of watermelon.

I love watermelon anything, so..

I really liked the Glow Recipe Sleeping Mask, my skin looked great the next morning . I have also tried their watermelon gel mask, I like that too.

I have some Purlisse sheet masks, they are great after a drying clay mask.

The Hanhoo serum is okay, smells good but I wasn’t feeling it, no wow factor in it’s performance. (I think you can get that at Walmart actually.)

Honestly, I may try putting actual watermelon on my face this summer, unless I read something that says it’s a terrible idea.

If you are interested in the Glow Recipe Sleeping Mask, this is a really good deal:

It includes a 1 oz jar of the watermelon mask and some other amazing products including a Topaz Huda palette for about $30.00USD:

Living Proof Restore Mask Treatment: on clean, wet hair, apply Restore Mask Treatment generously from roots to ends. Leave in for five minutes. Rinse thoroughly. Use 1-2 times per week in place of the Restore Conditioner.

The Ordinary Alpha Arbutin 2% + HA: apply a few drops to face in the morning and evening as part of your skin care regimen. Use sun protection in the morning.

Patchology Flashmasque Hydrate: use once a week or as often as needed. Apply before make up or at night to clean, dry skin. Press the material snugly into facial contours - leave for five minutes (or longer) then remove and press any residual serum into skin.

Glow Recipe Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask: as a sleeping mask, use two scoops or a generous layer on skin as the final step of your evening routine. Pat gently until absorbed and wash thoroughly in the morning.

NARS The Multiple: The Multiple can be used for cheeks, eyes, and lips – under or over foundation, or even under powder blush to create more intense luminosity.

Huda Beauty Topaz Obsessions Palette: apply with fingers or brushes for endless eye enhancement.

Hydrating Watermelon Rind Facial from Blah Blah Magazine

We are thrilled to be featuring a post today from Cybele Masterman, author of Blah Blah Magazine. Cybele has shared some really beautiful and creative beauty recipes on her site. From skin soothing lotions to foaming cleansers, Cybele has a way of making her homemade beauty recipes extra special. This week’s hydrating facial is no exception. Thank you, Cybele, for sharing your recipe with us!

Is there anything as cooling and refreshing as watermelon? We devour the juicy fruit and throw away the rind. Not anymore! Now you can save the rind to give your skin a much needed drink.

The Chinese have been using watermelon rind as a skin healer and rejuvenator for centuries. In Traditional Chinese Medicine it’s used to treat a condition they call ‘summer heat’. Perhaps, it’s so effective, because of the powerful antioxidant, citrulline, found in the rind.

This hydrating and rejuvenating watermelon rind face mask cools and rejuvenates the face, leaving skin soothed and refreshed.

Hydrating Watermelon Rind Facial

  • 2 tablespoons grated Watermelon Rind
  • 2 tablespoons Plain Yogurt (or equivalent yoghurt powder)
  • 4 drops Geranium Essential Oil
  1. In a small mixing bowl, combine grated Watermelon Rind, Plain Yogurt and Geranium Essential Oil. Mix the ingredients well.
  2. Remove the mixture and transfer it to a clean container.
  3. Refrigerate the mixture for up to three days, then discard it.

Apply a liberal amount of the mask to your clean face. Wait 15 – 20 minutes before rinsing with clean, tepid water. Follow with your favorite toner and moisturizer.

How do you like to cool off in summer?

Introducing the Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial

Clay for your skin? It doesn’t exactly seem groundbreaking at first, seeing as clay masks were one of the OG skincare products. But there’s always been a lot of room for improvement, as traditional formulas could leave skin matte, yes — but also tight and dry. Clay masks were a little too good at absorbing oil from skin, and they often did just that without restoring any hydration. That could also cause skin to overcompensate by increasing oil production, which often defeated the purpose of using a clay mask in the first place.

That’s why we’re so excited to introduce the Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial, which has all the skin-purifying, pore-clearing properties of your favorite clays, but with innovative technology that infuses the formula with ample hydration. It gives you the best of all worlds — refining pores, gently exfoliating, and hydrating skin — all in one easy, 5-minute treatment.

What sets it apart from the Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask? We’re glad you asked. This creamy mask is a daily, rinse-off mask that works ASAP to give you glowing results, whereas our sleeping mask is designed to stay on your skin overnight for the max amount of benefits. This also has various methods of exfoliation, versus the alpha hydroxy acids in the sleeping mask. And while the latter is all about smoothing skin and imparting a glow while you sleep, our Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial is all about decongesting pores and blackheads. With that in mind, let’s take a closer look.

What’s inside

While we try not to play favorites, the star of the show is our exclusive hyaluronic clay in the formula. It’s technically made of kaolin clay — which is a pillow-y, less drying clay than other types — that’s been infused with a high molecular weight hyaluronic acid. The clay helps the hyaluronic acid better absorb into skin and works its magic, drawing in a thousand times its own weight in water. Together, they help refine pores without sapping skin of moisture.

Then, there’s our lineup of exfoliants. There are two methods of exfoliation: Chemical, which uses chemicals to break bonds between dead skin cells and slough them off, and physical, which manually rubs off the dead skin cells. For the chemical exfoliants, you’ll find a blend of watermelon enzymes, beta hydroxy acid (BHA), and polyhydroxy acid (PHA), whereas we use blueberry seed powder for the latter.

Chances are, you already know and love BHA, naturally derived from willow bark in this case. It’s an oil-soluble ingredient, so it’s able to do a deep-dive into sebum-packed pores and dissolve gunk, such as blackheads. PHA is the gentler cousin to AHAs it offers mild exfoliation without any irritation, and is gentle enough for even the most sensitive skin types. Finally, with watermelon enzymes, we’re giving a nod to two of our staple ingredients: Watermelon and fruit enzymes. (There’s also watermelon extract, which is jam-packed with antioxidants and vitamins.)

For physical or manual exfoliation, on the other hand, the Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial has blueberry seed powder. It’s ultra-fine, so you won’t run into the same problem as with gritter or coarser physical exfoliants (which could create micro-tears in the skin if you’re not careful). It’s as gentle as it gets so as not to overdo the exfoliation — while still offering just enough to smooth skin and keep pores clear.

How to use it

After cleansing, apply a generous amount of Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial to damp skin all over your face. If you feel slight tingling, that’s normal. Wait five minutes — brush your teeth, scroll through IG, sit on the couch and do some deep breathing — and then rinse with lukewarm water before following up with the rest of your routine. You can use it daily if you want. (It’s that gentle.)

If you’ve had to use serious elbow grease to remove your clay masks in the past, you’re in for a treat: The Hyaluronic Clay Facial is a lightweight texture that doesn’t dry down and rinses easily. Consider your towels spared.

That said, if your skin is on the sensitive side, start by applying it for only two minutes, then gradually work your way to five minutes. You can also use it to multimask. T-zone looking shiny? No sweat: Apply the clay facial on your nose and forehead only for an instant fix.

We’re beyond thrilled that we can finally share this innovative launch that everyone can use, and can’t wait for you to try the Watermelon Glow Hyaluronic Clay Pore-Tight Facial for yourself. Got questions? Just leave a comment below and we’ll get back to you!

As Memorial Day approaches—and with it the promise of three full months of sun, long days, and carefree good times—there’s no better time than the present to think positive summer thoughts: bikinis! swimming! watermelon! The sweet, juicy fruit that often accompanies outdoor picnics and dusky barbecues is perhaps the ultimate warm weather symbol. But it’s also packed with antioxidants and free radical–fighting lycopene, meaning the delicious treat happens to be really good for your skin, too.

Unsurprisingly, that has helped make it “Korea’s favorite fruit,” Glow Recipe cofounder Sarah Lee reveals in Vogue’s new June issue. Inspired by the DIY recipes she grew up with that leveraged the melon’s effectiveness at soothing heat rash, acne, and sunburns (“my mother used to grate cold watermelon rind to put on my face as a cooling mask,” says Lee), she and partner Christine Chang just launched their own Watermelon Glow Sleeping Mask, a gel-textured, radiance-boosting hydrator and exfoliator in one. Here, they’ve also provided a few ideas on how to multitask your leftover watermelon this weekend following an outdoor barbecue for eight—or an indoor self-care party for one.

Glow Recipe DIY Watermelon-Rind Mask

Step 1: Slice watermelon into discs and quarters, creating 2-inch-thick triangular wedges. Step 2: Remove pink flesh so that only a hint of it remains on the rind (cube flesh and save for snacking). Step 3: Chill rind in refrigerator for at least 10 minutes. Step 4: Using a mandolin, slice the rind into paper-thin pieces and apply directly to irritated skin until the cooling sensation subsides.

It can be used two to three times a week, and either rinsed off after 10 minutes or left on overnight for more intense results.

The Watermelon Sleeping Mask is unique in that it simultaneously exfoliates and hydrates skin, which brand founders and CEOs Christine Chang and Sarah Lee say is the secret to great skin.

“We are huge proponents of chemical exfoliants over physical ones to minimize any rubbing, pulling or friction on the skin,” Chang told HuffPost. “Our Watermelon Sleeping Mask was a huge success as it had an unexpected pairing — AHAs to gently exfoliate to resurface the skin, combined with watermelon extract and hyaluronic acid to hydrate and nourish skin at the same time.”

Watermelon might seem like an unusual ingredient for the beauty world, but it’s become a staple for the Glow Recipe brand because of its anti-inflammatory properties and essential vitamins.

“In Korea, our grandmothers used to rub watermelon rind on our skin in the summer to soothe and cool heat rash and irritation,” Lee said. “We never really saw watermelon front and center and really shine as a skin-saver.

It’s claim to fame is its exfoliating powers, and the fact that it does so while you sleep. We tested it out, and we’ve officially jumped on the watermelon bandwagon.

First, it smells like a watermelon Jolly Rancher, and that&aposs reason enough to smear it all over your face. And aesthetically, the super lightweight gel formula has a pale pink hue, so it goes with your millennial color scheme. It&aposs made with key ingredients like watermelon extract to hydrate and nourish, hyaluronic acid to further hydrate your skin, AHAs to gently exfoliate your skin and smooth your skin.

While bedtime is insinuated in the name, you can also use it as a regular exfoliating mask if you have sensitive skin, and you&aposll feel (and see!) the benefits within about ten minutes.

Two InStyle staffers put it to the test in two different ways. One editor, who has reactionary skin, used it as a regular mask and said her skin felt incredibly smooth and soft afterwards. She also mentioned her skin tone overall seemed brighter and more even. The other editor road-tested it as a sleeping mask and said her skin felt very smooth come morning. Clearly, the exfoliating powers are there.
