The James Beard Foundation’s third annual Taste America is about to begin a 10-city tour, and for six weekends spanning from September 18 to November 7, lucky residents of Boston, Charleston, Chicago, Los Angeles, Miami, Minneapolis, New Orleans, Phoenix, San Francisco, and Seattle will be treated to walk-around tastings and dinners from some of the city’s (and country’s) most renowned chefs. The first event will be held in Miami on September 18 at The Forge, and tickets are still available.

The lineup and menu for this event looks amazing. During the walk-around tasting reception, chefs who will be on hand to serve small plates include The Federal’s Cesar Zapata (pork larb); Alter’s Bradley Kilgore (oyster mushroom with smoked soy glaze); Sugarcane’s Timon Balloo (Coca-Cola braised oxtail); Ortanique on the Mile’s Cindy Hutson (coffee- and cocoa-crusted wild salmon); and the soon-to-open Glass & Vine’s Giorgio Rapicavoli (raw scallop with Waldorf salad). The sit-down portion of the evening’s menu starts with a tuna crudo prepared by chef Rocco DiSpirito, followed by a miso-marinated Chilean sea bass from James Beard Award-winning chef Christopher Lee of Miami Beach’s The Forge. The third course is veal saltimbocca with farro risotto from DiSpirito, and for dessert, Pubbelly’s Sergio Navarro will serve “Breakfast 5.0”: milk panna cotta, banana ice cream, and Fruity and Cocoa Pebbles textures.

And on September 19, a cooking demo by DiSpirito, book signings, tastings from local food producers, and demos and tastings from national sponsors will be held at the Sur La Table at Mizner Park in Boca Raton.

“The opportunity to cook for such a prestigious event with such great local chefs and Rocco is amazing,” chef Cesar Zapata, who will be opening his newest concept, Phuc Yea, in a few weeks, told us. “As a chef you dream of being involved with the James Beard Foundation, whether it’s cooking at the James Beard House or at an event like this, or being nominated for a James Beard Award. They help so many chefs and other people in the industry, and to be involved with them in any way is such an honor.”

A portion of the evening’s proceeds will be donated to the Taste America Scholarship Fund, which awards scholarships to students in each Taste America host state. Tickets start at $250, and can be purchased here.

Southbound Hospitality Announces the Opening of: Three Restaurant and No. 3 Social Rooftop Bar & Lounge in Wynwood Arcade with Celebrated American Chef Norman Van Aken.

Southbound Hospitality Group is pleased to announce two distinctive food and beverage experiences opening in the city’s vibrant Wynwood neighborhood. No. 3 Social is set to open later this October with restaurant Three to follow.

Located in Wynwood Arcade, on 50 NW 24th Street, the restaurant, rooftop bar and lounge is located next to the soon to be opened cooking school, In the Kitchen with Norman Van Aken.

The concept will pay homage to the Magic City, its colorful history and culinary spirit. The legendary Floridian Chef Norman Van Aken, known as the founding father of New World Cuisine will lead the culinary program, and celebrated hospitality veterans Susan Buckley and Candace Walsh will oversee the business operations of the venture they have worked so hard to bring to life.

“I am very thrilled to be a part of a hospitality project of this nature, we believe that it’s the first of its kind in Miami,” says Van Aken. “I love being involved with Southbound Hospitality Group because we share a philosophy of building communities, a commitment to outstanding service and food, and a drive to offer unique experiences to Miami.”

Three, the flagship restaurant in Wynwood Arcade, is both energetic and welcoming, and surrounds guests with the nature and art-infused inspirations of Florida culture. Three has 100 seats, including a 10-seat chef’s counter where guests can get a close up view of the craftsmanship and artistry of the culinary team.

Chef Norman Van Aken guides this personalized and educational endeavor with Chef-de-Cuisine Miguel Massens. “Three” highlights Chef Van Aken’s New World Cuisine, which celebrates the ethnic diversity and food history of Florida in a globally informed way. Three is one of the only restaurants in South Florida offering a fully ‘prix fixe’ menu. There will be a 3- or 4-course menu as well as a 7-course ‘Chef’s Tasting Menu’.

No.3 Social, the only rooftop bar and lounge in Wynwood, presents an atmosphere that will liven up the Wynwood skyline. This rooftop destination can accommodate 100 guests under canopy cover.

No. 3 Social will feature highly curated soulful music to accompany the food which pays homage to street foods from around the world, while incorporating the flavors of Florida. The bar program features vibrant cocktails inspired with local ingredients, a carefully selected wine list, and locally crafted beers.

The beverage and wine programs at both Three and No. 3 Social will complement Chef Van Aken’s menu with an eclectic wine list and a cocktail menu. Jean-Baptiste Barre, the sommelier, is on hand to help guide guests from a list that has been created by one of New York City’s most venerated wine experts, Heidi Turzyn.

“We’re excited to bring this concept to Wynwood. This rooftop is everything, that everything else is not,” says Buckley. “There is the culinary, beverage and hospitality components and so much more. This is where it all comes together, the energy of our community music, art, air, & light. This vibe we have created is truly the soul of Wynwood.”

Led by co-founders Susan Buckley and Candace Walsh, along with Chef Norman Van Aken, Southbound Hospitality Group designs, brands, and operates a high-end lifestyle hospitality experience with a common belief in uncommon luxury, convenience of location, and world-class amenities.
