Hi-Chew to Open North Carolina Factory

Hi-Chew to Open North Carolina Factory

Japanese candy company plans to start U.S. production

Hi-Chew will start being made in the U.S. in 2015.

Demand for Japanese candy has grown so high in the U.S. that Hi-Chew — a popular brand of fruit-flavored chewy candy— has decided to open a new factory in North Carolina to make its candy in the U.S.

According to RocketNews24, Hi-Chew’s manufacturer, Morinaga, has been pushing Hi-Chew in the U.S. since about 2008, but it was still hard to acquire outside of Japanese grocery stores and Asian markets.

But when Boston Red Sox pitcher Junichi Tazawa started sharing his Hi-Chew candy with teammates, Hi-Chew became so popular among the players that in 2012 Morinaga became an official sponsor of the Boston Red Sox, and there are Hi-Chew ads all over Fenway Park.

Hi-Chew reports its U.S. sales doubled in 2013, and the candy will now be sold in Safeway stores across the U.S. With demand that big, shipping the candy all the way from Morinaga's production facilities in Taiwan started to seem silly, so the company decided it will open its first-ever U.S. production facility for Hi-Chew in North Carolina sometime next year.

Seasonal restaurants start to open in North Country

BEEKMANTOWN &mdash Some seasonal food stops are emerging from winter hibernation, and Udder Delight Dairy Shop owner and operator Jerry Deno says he can feel the North Country excitement.

His Route 22 ice cream and food stand, situated less than a mile from Beekmantown Central School, began serving up cones and other seasonal favorites over the weekend.

&ldquoIt&rsquos the first sign of spring for a lot of people,&rdquo Deno said. &ldquoThe energy is always there kids are happy to see you.&rdquo

The stand is operating under the same COVID-19 safety protocols as last year, including social distancing, face coverings and a requirement that patrons chow down in their vehicles, not at the site&rsquos typical picnic tables.

Udder Delight has about 15 employees this year, as is standard, and is open every day from 11:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

While specials will soon be introduced, as well as an expansion to ice cream cake offerings, Deno said the dairy shop&rsquos menu had largely remained the same. In addition to soft-serve ice cream, the stand offers a weekly non-dairy option, sundaes and flavor bursts, as well as hot dishes like Michigans, poutine, chicken strips and fried dough.

Opening weekend, though chilly, was bustling, Deno said.

&ldquoIt&rsquos always our busiest time of the year when we first open. You see the regulars that have been coming for years that you get to reacquaint with.&rdquo

Despite the rush of customers, the owner said Udder Delight hadn&rsquot run out of any favorites over the weekend.

&ldquoWe&rsquore usually pretty well stocked,&rdquo he said. &ldquoWe know what to expect we&rsquove been at it long enough.&rdquo
