The Rise of Medicinal Mixology: Cocktails That Treat 5 Symptoms

"We're serving cocktails that allow the well-heeled crowd to ingest medicinal ingredients in ways they like," says mixologist Neal Bodenheimer, co-owner of the aptly named Cure in New Orleans. A 2010 University of Texas study showed that one to two drinks a day could increase longevity, and infusing them with curative ingredients can improve immunity and alleviate many ailments, says Jim White, R.D., spokesperson for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Ready to retire the hot toddy?

1. Beat a cold
The Drink: Farmer's Daughter from Teardrop Cocktail Lounge, Portland, Ore.
The Cure: Goldenseal extract, which Native Americans used to treat digestive ailments and skin problems, has anti-inflammatory properties that may improve immunity and digestive function and help curb cold symptoms.

The Ingredients
1 ounce Banks 5 Island Rum
3/4 ounce Plymouth Gin
1 teaspoon Luxardo Maraschino Originale Liqueur
1 teaspoon cane-sugar syrup
6 to 8 drops Herb Pharm Goldenseal Extract

Combine ingredients in a rocks glass over ice and stir for 30 seconds. Garnish with grapefruit zest.

2. Lower blood pressure
The Drink: Sur la Mer from Pour Vous, Los Angeles
The Cure: This reimagined daiquiri contains E3Live algae, which may reduce blood pressure and promote energy, focus, and immunity.

The Ingredients
1 pinch of Lime Fresco salt
1/4 ounce algae thawed at room temperature (try E3Live)
1 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 ounce evaporated cane syrup
2 ounces Plantation 3 Stars Rum

Combine ingredients in a shaker and add ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a chilled coupe glass. Garnish with a lime twist.

3. Fight the flu
The Drink: The End Is Nigh from Cure, New Orleans
The Cure: While Varnelli Amaro Sibilla is no longer used as an antimalarial drug, its high concentrations of gentian, a bitter herb, and quinine, an alkaloid found naturally in cinchona-tree bark, may still reduce fever, curb pain, and ease digestion.

The Ingredients
11/2 ounces Rittenhouse bonded rye
1 ounce Bonal Gentiane-Quina aperitif wine
1/4 ounce Varnelli Amaro Sibilla
2 dashes of Angostura Bitters

Combine ingredients in a mixing glass. Stir 40 revolutions and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with an orange peel.

4. Avoid impotence
The Drink: Johnny Utah from Polite Provisions, San Diego, Calif.
The Cure: The tiny celery seeds in this paloma-like drink reportedly improve erectile function, and they've been shown to possibly decrease cholesterol and blood pressure in animal studies.

The Ingredients
2 ounces Olmeca Altos Tequila Blanco
3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
3/4 ounce celery-seed syrup (Boil 2 cups water. Remove from heat and add 2 cups sugar and 1/2 cup celery seeds. Allow to cool and strain.)
1 dash of Scrappy's Celery Bitters
1 pinch of salt
1 ounce soda water

Combine ingredients and shake well. Strain into a double-old-fashioned glass over ice. Top with soda water and garnish with a lime wedge.

5. Relieve stress
The Drink: Bees Knees from Apothèke, New York City
The Cure: With a generous supply of amino acids, essential fatty acids, and vitamins, the bee pollen in this drink may suppress your appetite, increase your energy, and help you decompress.

The Ingredients
2 ounces Aylesbury Duck Vodka
2 dashes of Green Hour Immunity Tincture
1/2 teaspoon bee pollen
1 ounce pink-guava juice
1/2 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice
1/2 ounce simple syrup

Combine all ingredients in a shaker and add ice. Shake vigorously and strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a slice of guava and a pinch of bee pollen.

5 Fresh-Squeezed Cocktail Recipes For Your Restaurant

Summer may be winding down, but we bet your clientele still wants something seasonal and refreshing when they sit down at the bar or a table. If your restaurant wants to offer something delicious and different with your cocktail menu, fresh fruit juice is key. Here are five fresh recipes we urge you to try.

Lemon-Strawberry Mojitos
Of course, the classic mojito’s lime component is a great way to put those juicers for restaurants to good use. But there’s no reason you have to stay true to the traditional. If you want something a bit sweeter, you can opt for this version.

Muddle eight lemon wedges in a cocktail shaker with four whole strawberries and about 20 fresh mint leaves. Then, add crushed ice and eight ounces of aged rum. Juice enough lemons to make three ounces of fresh lemon juice. Add this juice to the mix along with two ounces of prepared sugarcane syrup or agave nectar. Shake well and strain into glasses filled with ice. To finish, garnish with strawberry halves and mint sprigs.

Carrot Cocktail
While carrot might be a subtle ingredient found in many juice bar recipes, it’s one that’ll probably raise some eyebrows when it’s found on a cocktail menu. But the natural sweetness of this vegetable is perfectly suited to this refreshing (and odd) drink.

You’ll need to use those juicers for restaurants to prepare both carrot juice and lemon juice. Combine three-quarters of an ounce of scotch, three-quarters of an ounce of mezcal, and a quarter-ounce of Licor 43 in a shaker with ice. Along with the liquors, you’ll add one ounce of heirloom carrot juice, three-quarters of an ounce of freshly squeezed lemon juice, and a half-ounce of agave syrup. Shake until chilled and strain over ice, garnishing with a carrot chip to finish.

Grapefruit Salty Dog
If you have a customer who doesn’t like sweet stuff but loves an orange-y hue to their adult beverages, this is an incredibly fresh and simple option to offer. It’s as beautiful as a summer sunset but isn’t laden with sugar, making it a welcome addition to any menu.

Using your commercial juicer, yield one-third cup of red grapefruit juice. Fill a glass with crushed ice and add sea salt to the rim. Combine the juice with two tablespoons of vodka. Shake or stir (dealer’s choice). Pour over the glass and garnish with a grapefruit slice.

Pineapple-Watermelon Cocktail
When someone’s craving something tropical with a little kick, you can’t go wrong with this drink. Not only is the combination of flavors delicious, but you can also drive home the health benefits of these ingredients. An eight-ounce serving of unsweetened pineapple juice, for instance, contains magnesium, calcium, and an enzyme called bromelain that actually has anti-inflammatory properties. That means that this could literally cure what ails you! And while the health benefits of juicing will offer a bit more than one can obtain with a single cocktail, it’s nice to know that when you clink glasses and toast to your health, you can actually mean it.

Rely on your juicers for restaurants to yield one and one-half ounces of pineapple juice and one and one-half ounces of watermelon juice. Pour these juices into a cocktail shaker filled with ice, along with one ounce of vodka and one to two slices of jalapeno. Muddle the ingredients, shake well, and strain into a glass with ice. If your diner wants both heat and sweet, this will definitely deliver.

Blood Orange Margarita
The original OJ always has a place at the bar, but you can offer a nice twist by opting for blood orange instead. This citrus-filled cocktail is an ideal accompaniment to a Mexican dish or stands just as well on its own.

To start, rub the rim of the glass with a lime wedge and dip it in salt. Add two ounces of tequila, one ounce of triple sec, three ounces of fresh blood orange juice, the juice of one lime, and a pinch of sugar to a shaker and mix well. Pour the drink into a glass with ice and garnish with a lime wedge.

Harvesting and Preparing for Use

Depending on your climate, elder shrubs may bloom at various times over the summer between June and August.

To harvest, pick a warm dry day when the plant is in full bloom. Harvest during the morning or evening to keep the picked flowers from wilting in the sun or try to find a shady place to set them while you work.

Pluck off entire clusters of blossoms at the base, shake gently to dislodge any hidden insects, and place each bundle into your basket or bag.

If you don&rsquot have any elder plants in your yard don&rsquot worry! Just look for wild ones on the edges of streams, ponds, or along other disturbed edges such as fences or roads.

If you also plan to harvest the berries later in the season, pick flowers selectively, leaving some clusters intact here and there.

I would recommend taking no more than a third on each plant. This is good practice anyway, as it is best to always leave some behind for the birds and the bees!

Once harvested, you can preserve for later use by drying and storing in tightly lidded jars in a dark place.

To dry, lay flowers on trays or mesh screen and leave in a dark, dry place for about a week.

When fully dry, make sure they are still a similar yellow or white color to when they were fresh. Browning can be prevented by avoiding light during the drying process.

If you prefer, you can also leave flowers attached to the stem while drying and hang in bunches in a cool, dark location. I often dry herbs in a back closet.

Before using for food or medicine, it is important to separate the flowers from the stems. Leaves, stalks, and roots of these plants are toxic and should not be consumed.


New phase III data shows investigational antibody cocktail casirivimab and imdevimab reduced hospitalisation or death by 70% in non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19

Basel, 23 March 2021 - Roche (SIX: RO, ROG OTCQX: RHHBY) today confirmed positive topline results from the largest trial to date assessing a COVID-19 treatment in infected non-hospitalised patients (n=4,567 REGN-COV 2067). The phase III outcomes trial in high-risk non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19 met its primary endpoint, showing the investigational antibody cocktail of casirivimab and imdevimab reduced the risk of hospitalisation or death by 70% (1,200 mg intravenously [IV]) and 71% (2,400 mg IV) compared to placebo.

Casirivimab and imdevimab also met all key secondary endpoints in the phase III REGN-COV 2067 trial, including the ability to reduce symptom duration from 14 to 10 days (median numbers). In addition, a companion phase II trial (REGN-COV 20145) in low risk symptomatic or asymptomatic non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19 showed significant and comparable viral load reductions across doses ranging from 300 to 2,400 mg.

“Today's results show the important medical benefit casirivimab and imdevimab may provide to people with COVID-19 by significantly reducing their risk of hospitalisation and death,” said Levi Garraway, M.D., Ph.D., Roche’s Chief Medical Officer and Head of Global Product Development. “New infections continue to rise globally with over three million reported cases last week, so this investigational antibody cocktail may offer hope as a potential new therapy to high-risk patients - particularly in light of recent evidence showing that casirivimab and imdevimab together retain activity against key emerging variants. Together with our partner Regeneron, we are grateful to the patients and investigators who have participated in ongoing clinical trials and look forward to discussing the growing body of evidence with health authorities and to bringing the treatment to as many people as possible."

In addition to these trials in non-hospitalised patients, the investigational antibody cocktail of casirivimab and imdevimab is currently being studied in a phase II/III clinical trial for the treatment of COVID-19 in hospitalised patients, the phase III open label RECOVERY trial of hospitalised patients in the UK, and a phase III trial for the prevention of COVID-19 in household contacts of infected individuals. As of March 2021, approximately more than 25,000 people have participated in casirivimab and imdevimab clinical trials.

Detailed results from both trials (REGN-COV 2067 and REGN-COV 20145) will be shared with regulatory authorities and submitted for peer review as soon as possible. Regeneron will share new data with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Roche and Regeneron will continue to work with the European Medicines Agency (EMA) and other health authorities across the globe. Earlier this year, the EMA’s Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use issued a scientific opinion under Article 5(3) of Regulation 726/2004, supporting the use of casirivimab and imdevimab as a treatment option for patients with confirmed COVID-19.

Key results from phase III REGN-COV 2067 trial in non-hospitalised patients 1-3

  1. Based on the mFAS population, which includes all randomised patients with a positive SARS-CoV-2 RT-qPCR test from NP swabs at randomisation and ≥1 risk factor for severe COVID-19.
  2. The formal hierarchical analysis first evaluated 2,400 mg dose versus concurrent placebo and then evaluated 1,200 mg dose versus concurrent placebo.
  3. Based on phase I/II analyses showing that the 8,000 mg and 2,400 mg doses were indistinguishable, the phase III protocol was amended to compare 2,400 mg and 1,200 mg versus placebo, and 8,000 mg data were converted to a descriptive analysis.

A safety assessment was conducted on all available patient data up to day 169, and identified no new safety signals. Serious adverse events (SAEs) were largely related to COVID-19 and occurred in 1.1% of patients in the 1,200 mg group, 1.3% in the 2,400 mg group and 4.0% in the placebo groups. There was one death in the 1,200 mg group (n=827), one death in the 2,400 mg group (n=1,849) and five deaths in the placebo groups (n=1,843).

All patients in this analysis had at least one risk factor, including obesity (58%), age 50 years (51%) and cardiovascular disease, including hypertension (36%). Approximately 35% of patients were Latino/Hispanic, 5% were Black/African American and the median age was 50 years (range: 18-96 years). The phase III REGN-COV 2067 trial in non-hospitalised patients was previously amended to stop enrollment in the placebo group, following a recommendation from the Independent Data Monitoring Committee, which found clear efficacy for both doses.

About the REGN-COV 2067 trial
REGN-COV 2067 [NCT04425629] is a phase I-III adaptive, randomised, placebo-controlled, double-blind, clinical trial to evaluate the efficacy, safety and tolerability of casirivimab and imdevimab compared to placebo for the treatment of non-hospitalised adult patients with COVID-19. The objective of the confirmatory phase III trial in 4,567 patients was to prospectively demonstrate clinically significant effect on risk of COVID-19 hospitalisation or all-cause death in high-risk non-hospitalised patients, and confirm safety. The trial also prospectively evaluated potential benefit on symptom duration. The patient population included adult, non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19 with a symptom onset ≤7 days from randomisation. Patients were SARS-CoV-2 confirmed by molecular testing ≤72 hours from randomisation and not on any putative COVID-19 therapies. The trial design originally compared 8,000 mg and 2,400 mg versus placebo, and was amended to evaluate 2,400 mg and 1,200 mg versus placebo.

Initial data from the phase II portion of the study met primary and key secondary endpoints, showing a reduction in viral load and a decrease in medically-attended visits in non-hospitalised patients with COVID-19. These data were from two analyses of 799 symptomatic patients who received either casirivimab and imdevimab or placebo added to standard of care. The investigational antibody cocktail was also generally found to be well-tolerated.

About the REGN-COV 20145 trial
REGN-COV 20145 [NCT04666441] is a phase II randomised study to assess the antiviral effect of casirivimab and imdevimab across different intravenous and subcutaneous doses compared to placebo in 803 non-hospitalised low risk and asymptomatic adult patients with COVID-19. The primary endpoint is time-weighted average daily change from baseline in viral load, with key secondary endpoints including additional indicators of virology efficacy, safety and tolerability, concentrations of the antibodies in serum over time and the immunogenicity of the antibody cocktail against placebo. All tested doses met the primary endpoint, rapidly and significantly reducing patients’ viral load (log10 copies/mL) compared to placebo (p<0.001), with all doses demonstrating similar efficacy.

About casirivimab and imdevimab
Casirivimab and imdevimab is a cocktail of two monoclonal antibodies (also known as REGN10933 and REGN10987, respectively) and was designed by Regeneron scientists to block infectivity of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. They evaluated thousands of fully-human antibodies produced by the company's proprietary VelocImmune® mice, which have been genetically modified to have a human immune system, as well as antibodies identified from humans who have recovered from COVID-19.

The two potent, virus-neutralising antibodies casirivimab and imdevimab are believed to bind non-competitively to the critical receptor binding domain of the virus's spike protein, which is hypothesised to diminish the ability of mutant viruses to escape treatment and to protect against spike variants that may arise in the human population, as detailed in Science publications.

The cocktail of casirivimab and imdevimab has not been granted a marketing authorisation by any health authority. In November 2020, the antibody cocktail was authorised by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and paediatric patients (12 years of age and older weighing at least 40 kg) with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 and/or hospitalisation. The US EUA is temporary and does not take the place of the formal biologics license application (BLA) submission, review and approval process.

In February 2021, the European Medicines Agency’s (EMA) Committee for Medicinal Products for Human Use (CHMP) issued a scientific opinion under Article 5(3) of Regulation 726/2004 supporting the use of casirivimab and imdevimab as a treatment option for patients with confirmed COVID-19 who do not require oxygen supplementation and who are at high risk of progressing to severe COVID-19. The scientific opinion can be considered by EU member states when making decisions on the use of medicines at a national level before a formal authorisation is issued. The review under Article 5(3) was separate, but ran in parallel to the rolling review of casirivimab and imdevimab, which is currently ongoing by the EMA.

About U.S. FDA EUA status
Casirivimab and imdevimab have not been Food and Drug Administration (FDA) cleared or approved in the United States (US). They have been authorised by the FDA under an Emergency Use Authorization (EUA) during the current public health emergency for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19 in adults and paediatric patients (12 years of age and older weighing at least 40 kg) with positive results of direct SARS-CoV-2 viral testing, and who are at high risk for progressing to severe COVID-19 and/or hospitalisation. In addition to the gold standard PCR test, we have developed antigen tests to help diagnose the virus in settings where there is limited molecular laboratory infrastructure, rapid antigen where the virus can be detected on the spot, tests that can test for both flu and COVID-19 at the same time, both high throughput and at the point of care, and tests that can detect virus antibodies that can help monitor the spread of the virus and can also support in vaccine development. On 16 March 2021 the SARS-CoV-2 variant test was launched, designed to detect key spike mutations.

Aside from these tests we have also looked at how we can support care for patients who have COVID-19, receiving an FDA EUA for the Elecsys® IL-6 test to assist in identifying severe inflammatory response in patients with confirmed COVID-19, as well as launching Roche v-TAC, a digital algorithm that could help simplify the screening, diagnosis and monitoring of respiratory-compromised patients with COVID-19. Roche is working closely with governments and health authorities around the world, and has significantly increased production to support availability of tests globally.
Roche is actively involved in understanding the potential of the existing portfolio and is researching options for the future. In 2020, Roche entered into a number of new partnerships, including with Gilead, Regeneron and Atea, to develop, manufacture and distribute molecules that can potentially both treat and prevent COVID-19.

In October, Roche announced a partnership with Atea Pharmaceuticals to jointly develop the investigational compound AT-527. If approved, Atea will distribute AT-527 in the United States (US) and Roche will be responsible for global manufacturing and distribution outside the US. Atea’s compound has the potential to be the first oral antiviral to treat COVID-19 patients outside the hospital setting as well as in the hospital. Its anticipated formulation (pill) could allow for large-scale manufacturing and may help to facilitate access to a broad patient population.

In November, our partner Regeneron received FDA EUA for casirivimab and imdevimab, its investigational antiviral antibody combination, for the treatment of recently diagnosed patients with mild to moderate COVID-19 who are at high risk of progressing to severe COVID-19 and/or hospitalisation. The antibody cocktail is currently being studied in two phase I-III adaptive clinical trials for the treatment and in a phase III trial for the prevention of COVID-19. As part of the global partnership with Regeneron, we are committing a significant amount of manufacturing capacity and are working to expand supply of this antibody combination beyond the US to as many people as possible.

In addition, we are exploring the potential of our investigational molecules and existing portfolio: For example, Roche has initiated three global phase III clinical trials investigating the safety and efficacy of Actemra/RoActemra in COVID-19 associated pneumonia (COVACTA, EMPACTA and REMDACTA). Following initial interactions with health authorities, Roche will continue to monitor the evolving clinical evidence for Actemra/RoActemra in this setting.

While these are popular drinks, it is important to know how they can affect your body and your brain health.

Here are three types of drinks to avoid if you have stress and anxiety or poor sleep quality.

Warm Milk

Although folklore recommends warm milk before bed, the lactose content can be enough to make your gut unsettled for the night. Dairy beverages can be a common trigger for heartburn too. This can cause you to be restless at night and wake up more anxious than you were.

Warm milk may help sleep for a few select people because it is providing a source of an amino acid called tryptophan before bed, which may help the body make more serotonin and melatonin.

A better choice for tryptophan would be a slice or two of turkey, hulled pumpkin seeds, some aged cheese (which is low in lactose and has probiotics), or some tuna salad. These are some foods that calm nerves naturally for some people.

If you still want warm milk that is dairy-free, I suggest trying coconut milk that is heated up with a little honey and some grated ginger to help settle the stomach.

Alcohol

Alcohol is tempting because it initially seems to calm the nerves, but its overall effect in the long term is to create more anxiety by robbing the body of nutrients and disrupting a healthy microbiome. (include thyroid link)

It can also cause gastroesophageal reflux, which leads to poor sleep quality and a feeling of a mental drain the next day.

Tip: If you are trying to avoid stress and support mental health, reach for a relaxing tea or mushroom coffee substitute instead of alcohol.

Energy Drinks

Energy drinks may make people feel good initially, but cause many people’s stress levels to rise later because of the high amounts of caffeine, stimulants, and artificial ingredients like artificial sweeteners and flavors.

Also causing swings and crashes in energy, these drinks have way more side effects than you are bargaining for.

Tips for energy: If you need caffeine, try to stick to modest amounts of coffee and teas like green tea and cut your caffeine drinks off by 2 pm to avoid unwanted symptoms of anxiety and insomnia.

You can also have an energizing smoothie with nutritious chia seeds, berries, and greens to better support your body’s natural energy. These are foods that help relieve anxiety because of their high magnesium content and prebiotics that support your gut-brain connection.


UVA Health at forefront of COVID antibody research

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (WDBJ) - In light of President Trump’s treatment for COVID-19, an antibody cocktail produced by Regeneron is getting a lot of attention.

The University of Virginia is at the forefront of researching that very cocktail, which was given to the president along with Remdesivir and Dexamethasone.

“We know the antibody cocktail works to treat COVID-19 and that’s why President Trump received it last week what we don’t know and what we’ll test is will it actually work to prevent the infection," said Dr. William Petri at the University of Virginia.

UVA is one of 100 sites across the country which will work with 2,000 people who have been recently exposed to COVID.

40 of those people will come from Central Virginia and will receive the antibodies or a placebo.

Petri says antibodies given to COVID patients have proven to reduce the days symptoms are present from 13 to eight.

They are hopeful this research provides a positive path forward for treatment as well as a vaccine.

“It’s encouraging that the antibody that President Trump received works to treat COVID-19 because that tells us that we’re designing the vaccines in the right way, and I fully expect likely within a month we’ll hear the first successful results of a vaccine," said Petri.

Doctors do not anticipate any long-term side effects of this antibody treatment.

Once this study is complete, likely in about a month, Regeneron will apply for an emergency use permit from the FDA.
