Our contributor samples some of the Northwest’s best brews at this resort
There are several Northwest beers to sample at Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho.
During a sampling lunch at Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, chef Adam Hegsted at the Red Tail Bar and Grill asked me if I would like to sample beer. I am not a beer drinker but did not want to disappoint him and decided to give it a try. Here are some terrific beers from the Northwestern U.S. and their descriptions. If you are indeed a beer drinker, you may enjoy trying a beer flight with your lunch at this resort.
Brewery: Trickster, Coeur d' Alene, Idaho
Beer: Summer Kolsch
Style: German Hybrid Ale
Description: Very light in color, similar to a European style lager. Brewed seasonally for a great summertime refreshment. Trickster is one of Coeur d' Alene's newest breweries
Brewery: No-Li, Spokane, Wash.
Beer: Born & Raised IPA
Description: Copper in color with a hoppy nose. This IPA brings local hops to your glass. No-Li is one of Spokane's first and most prominent breweries.
Brewery: Ironhorse, Ellensburg, Wash.
Beer: Irish Death
Description: Known as beer candy to most microbrew drinkers. This beer can be described best as a dark smooth ale. Easy to drink for a dark ale.
The Coeur d’ Alene Casino is the home of Laughing Dog Breweries Uprooted Amber Ale. This Ale has been specifically brewed for the Coeur d’ Alene Casino, and have been a craft beer property favorite for the past two years. Fred Colby, an award-winning brewer, infused his Amber Ale recipe with his ESB (Extra Special Bitter) to create this private label brew. The color rich in copper, the local flavor of Pacific Northwest Hops, and its Cascade floral citrus hop nose, make this is a perfect craft beer for anyone that enjoys a tasty ale.
Front & Center: Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel CEO Laura Penney seen as standard-setter with safe reopening during pandemic
Nearly six months after becoming CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, Laura Penney was faced with undoubtedly the greatest challenge of her career: leading the property through a global pandemic.
As states enacted stay-home orders to slow the spread of COVID-19 in March, some 989 casinos closed nationwide, including the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, which employs 850 to 1,100 people – depending on the season – in its hotel, casino, spa, restaurants and golf course.
Under Penney’s leadership, the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel was the first in the country to reopen in May following pandemic-related closures, setting the standard for strict health and safety measures used by casinos nationwide.
Penney was among three gaming leaders who participated in a virtual opening keynote event at the American Gaming Association’s Global Gaming Expo, or G2E, in October. The three panelists shared how they successfully and responsibly reopened their properties during the pandemic.
“We wanted to open up the event, providing the industry an opportunity to hear lessons learned and optimism from folks on the ground,” said Cait DeBaun, senior director of strategic communications and responsibility at the American Gaming Association. “Laura had to navigate her staff through a global pandemic like many of the leaders in our industry and became first in health and safety protocols. Being the first casino to reopen in the U.S., obviously there’s leadership there that we wanted to introduce to our audience.”
Planning for the future
An Idaho native, Penney has been employed by the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel since it opened nearly 28 years ago.
Penney, who graduated from Eastern Washington University with a bachelor’s degree in commercial recreation management and leisure services, became planning director for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in 1991. She was part of a planning and development committee that evaluated the possibility of a gaming establishment on the Coeur d’Alene Reservation.
The Indian Gaming Regulatory Act was established by the federal government in 1988, allowing tribes to conduct gaming on their lands.
“That was the precedence of tribes being able to have gaming,” Penney said. “It actually was an infringement of our sovereignty, because we should have been able to do anything that was good for the tribe and also be encompassed in the community. But this federal act passed and it was something that some tribes were effectively utilizing.”
The idea for a gaming establishment was further sparked after the committee visited the Oneida Nation’s reservation, which had a destination resort and casino near Green Bay, Wisconsin.
“They had what we have today 20 years ago,” Penney said. “We toured their reservation. They were able to provide senior housing and a day care for their children. They had an outlet mall, a wellness center and they just had done amazing things with their gaming dollars. We came back and said, ‘We’ve got to do this.’ ”
The Coeur d’Alene Tribe negotiated a gaming compact with the state of Idaho in 1991 and opened a bingo hall in 1993. In the gaming compact, the tribe specified it wanted to put 5% of gaming profits toward education. To date, the Coeur d’Alene Tribe has provided $33 million for education, Penney said.
Since its beginning as a bingo hall, the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel, which is about 4 miles north of Worley, has expanded to include a hotel with 300 rooms, seven restaurants, 100,000 square feet of gaming space, a luxury spa and Circling Raven Golf Club.
Penney has served in a number of leadership roles throughout her career with the resort, including director of marketing, public relations and cultural tourism, and acting director of the casino.
As marketing director, Penney developed promotional strategies to bring the casino into profitability, and as tourism director, she assisted with launching several Native American cultural activities at the resort.
“I’ve been fortunate to thoroughly understand why we’re here, why we have this operation and the importance of what gaming has provided for our tribe and our community,” Penney said. “We’re one of the top employers within this community. We’re not just a commercial casino or a tribal development, we’re a government operation where we’re providing for our people. We’re providing money to sustain the law enforcement, for social services, for tribal programs, for education, and truly looking out for next generations to come.”
Persistence pays off
Penney had aspired to become CEO of the property for quite some time, having applied for the position four times.
When Penney asked why she was passed over for the CEO position, she was told she needed a master’s degree in business administration.
“That was quite a challenge to go back to school and make that commitment,” she said, referring to the decision to pursue a master’s degree. “At the time, my daughter was still in early years of high school. I was a single mother at the time and it was very difficult. But I was determined that I wanted to be CEO.”
Penney graduated with a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Idaho in 2014. When the CEO position opened up again, Penney applied and was passed over a third time for the job.
“I was disappointed. But then I truly had to do a gut check, and I said, ‘You know, it’s not my time,’ ” Penney said. “I think it’s always important that whatever you do, wherever you are, you just need to do the best job you can do and that you need to make yourself valuable.”
Penney’s persistence paid off.
She was named CEO of the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel in October 2019, becoming the first woman to hold the position.
“Laura’s story of growing with the casino to become the CEO is a tremendous story, and it’s obviously great to see female leadership,” DeBaun said. “I think her story of growth is one that resonates across the industry and what we provide in gaming careers across the country.”
Road to reopening
When COVID-19 took hold in the region in mid-March, Penney made the decision to close down the Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel several days before Idaho enacted a stay-home order.
“Since Day 1, we’ve always been concerned the safety and well-being of our customers, employees and the community, and we shut down,” she said. “That was a big decision … it was very concerning to see an empty casino floor and an empty parking lot. I knew in my heart that we were doing the right thing, but it was very concerning.
“I knew immediately we had to start working on a plan as to how we can open. But we knew we had to do it in a safe way.”
The Coeur d’Alene Casino Resort Hotel established a task force consisting of Coeur d’Alene Tribal Council members, directors of tribal departments, casino executives, medical professionals and Marimn Health’s leadership team to create guidelines for a phased reopening of the property based on COVID-19 trends and data.
The task force reviewed health and safety guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and a 37-page document of protocols from Wynn Resorts in Las Vegas.
Penney contacted other tribal casino CEOs in the region to ask how they were navigating the pandemic.
“We all just kind of took down the barriers and took off our competitive hats and we communicated. It was just amazing,” she said. “We all supported each other and what we are doing in our efforts. We all understood, because tribal gaming has served as an effective tool in being able to provide for ourselves as tribal people and our effort of taking care of ourselves for the next generation.”
The task force also communicated with casino employees and guests about the property’s safety protocols prior to its soft reopening April 27. Marimn Health officials conducted a property walk-through and assisted with establishing protocols.
Some of the safety measures include reducing capacity, temperature checks, requiring face masks, providing several hand sanitizing stations and installing Plexiglas barriers and floor markings for social distancing, among other things.
The property implemented enhanced cleaning procedures, including sanitizing high-touch areas multiple times a day and closing the property 3-7 a.m. daily for deep cleaning.
The property paid wages and benefits to employees during its five-week temporary closure and most workers chose to come back to work when the casino reopened, Penney said.
“When we had our official opening, which was May 1, it was just historical in regards to the number of people and the revenue that was generated,” Penney said.
Circling Raven Golf Club also had a successful reopening because, at more than 620 acres, it provided visitors ample space for social distancing, Penney said.
The task force continues to meet weekly to evaluate COVID-19 data, Penney said.
“We’ve done well because I think that we have provided a safe escape. Our spa is doing really well. Golf closed out with an amazing, record-breaking year and gaming, ironically, we have less patrons, but their gaming spend has gone up,” Penney said, attributing the increase in gaming revenue partly to fewer people traveling during the pandemic.
Plans for expansion
Penney’s goals this year are to foster collaboration among employees, maximize efficiency and capitalize on the property’s offerings to generate revenue.
The casino is embarking on a project to replace its buffet area with fast-food venues and a high-end gaming lounge with host offices. The buffet’s former admission area will be transformed into a patio with seating, which is expected to be open in the summer, Penney said.
There are also potential plans to add an RV park to the property, Penney said.
Most of all, Penney’s priority is ensuring guests enjoy visiting the property.
“They are like our family. We have what we call traditional tribal hospitality, and as tribal people, when people come to our home, we open our door, we provide them food, and try to make them comfortable and make them feel at home,” she said. “We’ve taken that same value system and incorporated it here within the resort. That’s why we have this slogan, ‘Welcome home.’ When you walk through our doors, we want you to feel comfortable, we want you to feel welcome and to feel like this is your home.”

We were trying to book an RV site in Coeur d'Alene area and all of the RV parks were full, so an RV park owner recommended we try here. It's a parking lot with electrical hookups, but for $20 and at the last minute, we were happy to have a place to stay. It's a busy place, especially on weekends. The sites are narrow for a big motorhome, but we made it work. They are also unlevel, so we needed blocks. The desk clerk went to the extra trouble of moving people around so we could stay 3 nights without having to move. Staff is nice, it feels safe, and the casino is fairly decent. They even have a non-smoking area. Although it seems that they put the oldest machines in the non-smoking gaming area. There is a "weedy" odor in the air that seems to come from the field next to the parking lot so we've been sneezing a bit.

We stayed here one night on our way to Lewiston Memorial day weekend. Cost is $20 for electric only, but they will give you $5 in extra play cash if you join their rewards club. We were there during the middle of the week, but they still have really good food at their restaurants. We came back the next weekend for one night and dry camped in the free area. I wanted to try the buffets, both dinner and breakfast. Great food at both dinner and breakfast buffet, which is only on the weekends.
The parking lot is not level, so will need a couple blocks on one side. Whether paying for electric site or just dry camping, you need to check in at the "Spa Towers" to get a parking permit.

PROS: signage to where the rv parking is easy to follow and the roads are plenty wide with few turns. The lot is very clean and there is 24/hr security monitoring it. Millie (dog) really enjoyed all the open/undeveloped space to run. They have an unfenced dog area with poop bags and little traffic going to/from the golf clubhouse. They have a few 50 amp outlets and many 30 amp.
CONS: they do charge $20. The RV lot is extremely sloped. I measured a 16" differential between the back and front of my coach.
So, the most level 50 amp spot was already taken by a rig even larger than mine. I opted instead to park next to the RV parking isle and run my generator during the hot part of the day. In exchange I opted not to pay the fee or check in at the desk. Seemed only fair. I was able to level the coach fine in my custom location and have a grand view of the prairie. Slept well considering I kept waiting for the magic knock on the door.

Coeur d’Alene After Dark
Night Out With the Girls
Want a quiet night out with the girls? Meet them at Barrel Room #6. This upscale wine bar known for its relaxing atmosphere is owned by Coeur d’Alene Cellars, a local family-owned winery. Split a bottle of award-winning Syrah with the girls and catch up on life while sampling gourmet cheeses or locally made chocolates.
When the bottle is empty, walk a few blocks to the Coeur d’Alene Resort and check out The Shore Lounge, which is located on the lobby level. The Shore Lounge is open Tuesday through Saturday nights and features karaoke, salsa dancing and live music. Sip on a mojito or top shelf martini and enjoy the good service and entertainment the resort is known for.
Hanging Out With Co-Workers
Meeting up with co-workers or old college buddies? The Beacon is the place for you. The Beacon is a favorite hangout among locals and is conveniently located right in the middle of the action. The full bar offering plenty of tables makes it a great gathering spot. The 1890’s era brick building was once a bank, so be sure and check out the men’s room, the former vault.
Next, head across the street to the Moose Lounge, is the newest addition to the downtown bar scene. Here you’ll find an intimate, comfortable lounge with pool tables, several video games, beer, wine, and ridiculously comfortable couches.
Boy Night Out/Bachelor Party
Taking your buddy out for his bachelor party? Start the evening off with dinner and shots at Cricket’s Downtown Bar & Grill. With appetizers like Idaho potato skins, calamari and nachos, you’ll prepare your bellies for a long night of drinking. In addition to excellent food, Crickets has a shot menu with 101 choices and a different drink special every day.
After dinner, check out the Torch Lounge, Coeur d’Alene’s only bikini bar. With scantily clad women performing acrobatic pole tricks, nightly drink specials and pool tables, The Torch Lounge is the perfect place for a guys’ night out. Don’t worry, because the Torch is a “look, but don’t touch” kind of place, so the wedding will still be on when the party is over.
On a related note, downtown Coeur d’Alene is an excellent setting for a bachelorette party. Reserve a table for the group at The Wine Cellar & Bistro. With nightly live music, an extensive wine list and excellent service, The Wine Cellar is sure to impress. The dinner menu includes treats like crab manicotti and brie chicken. There is also an authentic Italian tapas menu for those who want a little bit of everything
After dinner, reward yourselves for behaving like ladies with a trip to Mik & Macs, the nightclub where locals and tourists alike gather to expect the unexpected. In addition to a large dance floor, a DJ spinning the hits from 9 PM to 2 am and an impressive flavored martini list, Mik & Macs has the sweetest VIP deal in the area. $50 gets you your own set of couches, an attentive server to bring your drinks, and a bouncer to keep away any unwanted “friends.” Best of all, the $50 deposit goes toward your bar tab. That should just about cover all the shots with naughty names you buy for the bride-to-be.
Looking for Mr. Right or Ms. Right
Looking to hook up? Again- Mik & Mac’s is your place. Described by locals as a “meat market,” Mik & Mac’s is always packed with sexy singles ready to dance. Buy the cute blond a drink and see where the evening takes you. But beware of those pesky beer goggles.
When nothing but a wild and crazy night will do, check out The Iron Horse Bar & Grill. During the summer months, this bar can be heard before it is seen. Patrons spill out into the street, enjoying their cocktails from the sidewalk tables. On weekends, a live cover band plays tunes that pack the dance floor.
The drink of choice here is the Derailer: served in a small bucket with four straws and has been proven to be highly effective. Guests of The Iron Horse tend to be friendly and outgoing, so a night of fun is guaranteed here- whether you remember it or not.
When the music stops and the lights go up, call Lakeside Taxi at (208) 704-0151 for a ride home. Nothing ruins a big night out like a DUI.

Coeur d'Alene Casino is located in Worley, Idaho. In 1992 the Coeur d'Alene people began the process of negotiating with the State of Idaho, inaugurating a Bingo hall in 1993. The 20,000 square-feet property’s initial cost was $2.7 million. The project was managed by Chief Executive Officer Dave Matheson. Matheson also served as Tribal Chairman and Deputy Commissioner of Indian Affairs during President George Bush Sr.’s administration.
In 1994, Matheson and eLottery Chairman Robert A. Berman initiated the National Indian Lottery on behalf of the Coeur d'Alene people. The project consisted of the first multi-state lottery and was aimed at generating funds to help develop the Coeur d’Alene casino.
In 1994, the National Indian Lottery received approval from the Federal government. It initially operated via telephone sales, and later through the Internet. Robert A. Berman assisted in the development of the technology for the project that managed and monitored necessary security, age and border controls required to process lottery transactions. In 1996 the casino received a $14 million (USD) expansion, and by 1998 it made net profits that totaled $9.2 million (USD). The National Indian Lottery concluded in 1998 after receiving opposition from Attorney general Skip Humphrey via the District Court for the District of Idaho.
The casino has since gone through various major expansions and renovations. The resort currently includes two hotel towers, the Circling Raven Golf Club, eight restaurants, and 100,000 square feet of casino floor space. Profits from the casino’s revenues are invested back into the Coeur d’Alene community in areas of education and finance, including investments in property and land. In 2016, Francis SiJohn became the casino’s new CEO.
The Coeur d'Alene Casino includes 2,000 gaming machines (video poker, ShuffleMaster electronic tables, slots, and keno), a bingo hall, entertainment venues, retail areas, and multiple restaurants. It also includes a luxury hotel and the award-winning Circling Raven Golf Club.
