This is just like a "Butterfinger Cake" I've been making for years! Everyone that tries it loves it! I've never thought about using Heath Bars instead, but I definitely will try it now!

You won’t believe that this sinfully delicious cake starts out with just a regular box mix. Once the cake is mixed and baked, that’s when the real magic starts. My favorite part of this recipe is poking the holes in the cake and pouring the caramel sauce over the top. It is so fun! Make sure the holes are evenly spaced and not too close together, otherwise your cake will end up soggy.

Better Than Sex Cake

A rich chocolate cake laced with caramel sauce and topped with whipped cream. My favorite birthday cake and possibly better than sex!

Show Directions

For caramel sauce:
1) Combine sugar, corn syrup, and water in a 2 quart pot (you need a much bigger pot because it will expand). Bring to a simmer and cook, stirring frequently.

2) Once sugar is dissolved and mixture is bubbling, turn heat down to low and let simmer, without stirring, until mixture turns a dark amber color, about 8-10 minutes.

3) Once sugar is the dark amber color, immediately remove from heat and carefully stir in warmed cream. It will bubble and fizz like crazy.

4) Stir until smooth, scraping up any bits on the bottom of the pan. Add in butter and stir until smooth.

5) Stir in pinch of salt and vanilla. If mixture has any chunks in it at all, return to heat briefly (low heat) and stir until the mixture smooths out.

6) Cool and set aside until needed.

1) In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar and salt.

2) In a saucepan, melt together butter and cocoa powder. Once smooth, stir in boiling water.

3) Add cocoa powder mixture to dry ingredients and stir to combine.

4) In a separate bowl, whip together eggs, buttermilk, baking soda, and vanilla.

5) Stir buttermilk mixture into batter. Try not to overmix it but make sure all the flour is mixed in.

6) Prepare your baking pan by buttering it lightly and dusting it with cocoa powder.

7) Add batter to pan and bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes until a tester comes out clean in the center of the cake.

Finishing the Cake:
1) When cake comes out of the oven, poke a bunch of holes in it with a chopstick.

2) Mix the sweetened condensed milk with the caramel sauce and pour the mixture over the cake. Use a spatula to scrape the sauce back and forth so the sauce gets completely absorbed by the cake.

3) Let the cake sit at room temperature for 30 minutes.

4) Chill cake for at least an hour, but preferably a few hours.

5) Whip cream with sugar and vanilla until it forms stiff peaks and then frost cake with fresh whipped cream. Top with crumbled heath bars or chocolate chips!

Chocolate Sin (Lush)

This dessert recipe goes far, far back in my memory, though I was a bit older before I first heard it called "Better Than Sex." I distinctly remember a girlfriend calling it that and with a puzzled look on my face being told, "darlin', this is sooooo good that it is better than sex, that's why," and that was that. It sure has made multiple appearances in my life, that's for sure.

Now, I do also realize that there a loads of equally sinful and delicious desserts of no resemblance to this one, that are also called "Better Than Sex," depending on where you're from really. Frankly even though they are all different, that's perfectly fine with me. In fact, you can read about several different varieties of "Better Than Sex" desserts right in our discussion on the Facebook page recently. No matter the dessert, I figure if it earned a name like that, it's gotta be drool worthy, no matter the ingredients.

This particular one, made with a shortbread crust and layered with a cream cheese, powdered sugar and whipped cream layer, followed by a chocolate pudding layer, and topped with a final layer of whipped cream, is known itself by multiple names. Chocolate Sin, Sex in a Pan, Better Than Sex, Better Than Robert Redford, Almost a Sin, Girdle Buster, Chocolate Dessert, Chocolate Pudding Dessert, Chocolate Delight, Chocolate Dream and even Mississippi Mud are a few names I've heard.

If you've never made this before I do hope you try it. It really is delicious and super easy to make.

First you'll make a basic shortbread type of crust by combining butter with flour and nuts, and spreading that into a 9 x 13 inch glass baking dish, and baking it. Do this far enough in advance so that you have plenty of time to cool the crust completely. Remember, just like a cookie, this crust will not look set when you remove it from your oven. It will not look like it's done, but don't be tempted to keep baking it. It will continue baking from the residual heat of the pan and if you overcook it, the crust will harden and be difficult to cut through as a finished dessert. It should only be very lightly browned and should look like this - after it has cooled and set.

The first layer is made of softened cream cheese and powdered sugar whipped together and then you'll add a cup of homemade whipped topping or Cool Whip to that. I could eat a whole bowl of just this stuff!

Spread that over the cooled crust - an offset spatula is handy for this kind of thing.

Whip together two small packages of chocolate pudding with 3 cups of milk until slightly thickened and spread that over the cream cheese layer.

Over the chocolate pudding layer, you'll add a layer of plain whipped topping.

Cover and refrigerate for several hours or overnight - 24 hours is even better. I wait to garnish just before serving by grating a little bit of chocolate over the top using a fine grater, and then sprinkling just a bit of chopped pecan on top. Lawdy y'all, this is sooooo good. Dig in!

Recipe: Chocolate Sin (Lush)

Yield: About 12 servings

  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) of unsalted butter , softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup of all purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup finely minced, salted pecans
  • 1 ( 8 ounce ) package of cream cheese , softened at room temperature
  • 1 cup of powdered sugar
  • 1 cup of Cool Whip (or homemade whipped cream)
  • 2 (3.9 ounce) packages of instant chocolate pudding
  • 3 cups of whole milk
  • 1- 2 cups of Cool Whip (or homemade whipped cream)
  • Additional chopped pecans, for garnish, optional
  • Grated chocolate or Heath bits, for garnish, optional

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. In a bowl, mix together the flour, pecans and butter until mixture resembles cookie dough. Spread into the bottom of a 9 x 13 inch glass Pyrex baking dish. Bake at 350 degrees F for about 20 minutes or until lightly browned. The crust will appear underdone but will continue cooking in the pan, and will firm up as it cools, so don't be tempted to keep cooking it. Cool completely, about an hour. If time permits, I like to chill each layer in the fridge before topping with the next.

Mix together the cream cheese and powdered sugar until well blended. Add 1 cup of the Cool Whip and mix together. Spread this layer over the cooled crust.

Mix together the two boxes of pudding with the 3 cups of milk until slightly thickened, about 3 minutes. Carefully spread over the cream cheese layer.

Spread the remaining cup of whipped topping on top. Cover and refrigerate at least 4 hours - best if refrigerated 24 hours. Before serving, grate chocolate over the top and sprinkle with additional chopped nuts. Cut into squares.

Variations: May be made with a variety of crusts by substituting crushed cookies, graham crackers or vanilla wafers for the flour in the crust. Use about 1-1/2 cups of crushed cookies and because cookies already have some fat in them, start with a few tablespoons of melted butter, using only enough to bind the cookies together. May also use a variety of pudding flavors (vanilla, chocolate, butterscotch, lemon, etc.), or use any two different, but compatible flavors of pudding, either one layered on the other or blended together. Okay to substitute margarine, sugar free and lower fat products, if desired. May also add a layer of sliced fruit, for example, use banana pudding with sliced bananas or vanilla with sliced strawberries.

The "Secret" State Pie of Arkansas aka Possum Pie: Prepare crust as above, except use a 9-inch pie plate. Layer cream cheese layer as above, except for chocolate layer, beat 1 cup of sour cream with the pudding mix and milk in a separate bowl, cover and refrigerate for 30 minutes to set, then spoon over cream cheese layer. Cover and refrigerate, finish as above.

Oreo Delight: Combine 1-1/2 cups of Oreo cookie crumbs with 2 to 5 tablespoons of unsalted butter, melted, until crumbs bind together. Press into the bottom of the pan and bake in a preheated 350 degree oven for about 8 minutes. Set aside to cool completely, then proceed with remaining recipe. Crush additional Oreos to garnish top.

Lemon Lush: Prepare crust and first layer as above, except include the juice of one lemon. For second layer, substitute two packages of instant lemon pudding. Top with whipped topping. Garnish with a lemon twist.

Neapolitan Lush: Prepare shortbread or Oreo crust as above. Use vanilla, chocolate and strawberry pudding layers.

Coconut Cream Lush: Prepare shortbread or cookie crust as above. Substitute instant coconut cream pudding and stir in 1/4 cup flaked coconut. Stir in another 1/4 cup flaked coconut in the topping. Before serving, garnish with additional toasted coconut if desired.

How To make Better Than Sex Cake

Definitely better than bad sex or no sex. Totally 100% worth it.

RECIPE: (submitted by Nathan Polas)
1. One box of German Chocolate Cake (Whatever brand you prefer and make sure you have the ingredients to make the cake)
2. 2 16 oz jars of caramel (I use Hersey’s Brand)
3. One can of condensed sweet milk
4. 2 8 oz containers of Cool Whip
5. 1 bag of already crushed Health Chips. (If not available, crush Heath bars)
1. Make the German Chocolate Cake as follows on the back of the box. (I do use a 13x9 pan however)
2. IMPORTANT let cake cool until bottom of glass pan isn’t hot anymore.
3. While cake is cooling take 1 ½ of the caramel and mix it in a bowl with the condensed sweet milk. (If you would like to use the other ½ of the caramel go ahead, I just think it is too sweet with it)
4. Take some kind of kitchen utensil that has a thicker end to it and poke holes in the cake. Make as many holes as possible while trying not to connect any holes.
5. Now pour the caramel mixture all over the holes. Try and make sure each hole gets some of the mixture.
6. Now top with the Cool Whip (Both containers) and then add the Health Chips (As much as you would like).
7. Finally for best results let cool in fridge for at least 2-3 hours but it can be eaten right away.

Better than Sex Trifle recipe - chocolate cake, caramel, toffee and whipped cream

It doesn't get much easier than this trifle recipe - your favorite chocolate cake soaked overnight with sweetened condensed milk and caramel sauce - with chunks of toffee and of course creamy whipped cream!

You can use a box mix, store bought caramel sauce and cool whip for an even easier dessert - but personally I like the homemade touch - fresh whipped cream, homemade cake. always better and not much harder!

3/4 C white sugar
1/2 C corn syrup
1/3 C butter
2/3 C whipping cream

Remove from heat and cool 5 minutes.
Stir in whipping cream.

2 tsp unflavored gelatin powder
1/4 C cold water
3 C whipping cream (regular or heavy--I always use heavy cream)
1/3 C sugar
2 tsp vanilla
mix the gelatin and water - let sit 5 mins
microwave 30-40 seconds until dissolved - let cool
beat the whipping cream, sugar and vanilla to soft peaks
add the gelatin while beating on low
beat on high until you achieve stiff peaks

Beloved, stay with God! The peace of the Lord

The best recipes of your day: easy to prepare

1 (18.25 ounce) package devil's food cake mix
1/2 (14 ounce) can sweetened condensed milk
6 ounces caramel ice cream topping

3 (1.4 ounce) bars chocolate covered toffee, chopped
1 (8 ounce) container frozen whipped topping, thawed

Bake cake according to package directions for a 9x13 inch pan cool on wire rack for 5 minutes. Make slits across the top of the cake, making sure not to go through to the bottom.
In a saucepan over low heat, combine sweetened condensed milk and caramel topping, stirring until smooth and blended. Slowly pour the warm topping mixture over the top of the warm cake, letting it sink into the slits then sprinkle the crushed chocolate toffee bars liberally across the entire cake while still warm. (Hint: I crush my candy bars into small chunks as opposed to crumbs - I like to have pieces I can chew on!)
Let cake cool completely, then top with whipped topping. Decorate the top of the cake with some more chocolate toffee bar chunks and swirls of caramel topping. Refrigerate and serve right from the pan!

Change the toffee bits for crushed up Reese’s, Oreos, Butterfingers, Heath bar or even chopped nuts.

Real whipped cream, that is homemade and not from the can, can be used in place of the cool whip.

Instead of chocolate, you can use other cake flavors such as carrot, strawberry, vanilla and more.

Sex in a Pan: Robert Redford Dessert

If you grew up in the 70s, chances are you've seen this dessert at parties or at home when your family was hosting dinners. Perhaps you had the chance to make it yourself? Known by many names, most including the name of heartthrob Robert Redford, this layered dessert is rich, creamy, and unctuous, but mainly super easy to put together. Although it's hard to pinpoint how the name came about, the dish is also known as the "Robert Redford dessert," the "next-best-thing to Robert Redford" and the "better-than-sex dessert." Sinfully rich, this pan dessert is similar to the chocolate delight dessert, with layers of cream cheese, whipped topping, and two kinds of pudding on a simple baked shortbread crust.

Easily adaptable to your taste, this layered dessert is very forgiving. You can use any pudding flavor you like, but nothing beats the combination of vanilla and chocolate with cream. Many toppings work well, and there are no restrictions as to how much or how little you can use on top. Decorate with whatever crunchy toppings you like, such as nuts, small chocolate truffles, or shavings of white or dark chocolate.

This is a wonderful dessert to make the day before, and it also makes amazing leftovers—if you're lucky enough to have some left—as the cakes only improve with the passing days. Keep in the fridge, covered, for up to four days.

Yummm! I love this cake too and want some right now. Your recipe is better than mine becasue mine doesn't call for sweetened condensed milk. Gotta make this today, thanks! Love your blog and your pictures!

Instead of the caramel topping, you can use a jar of condensed milk. You just make soft toffee (caramel) of the milk, boiling the unopened jar in water. I learnt this from my Russian hubby. I also love to pour some sweetened condensed milk in a cup of coffee.

Carla Rainero-Brice

How long do u boil the condensed milk for to make toffee?

Carla, you have to make sure the can is completely covered with water and boil 3 hours, keep adding water as needed. Let the can cool completely, and open a wonderful can of creamy caramel! Makes great turtles too! If you need more info, just google it.

What you are making is Dulce de Leche. Be careful while cooking and keep the can covered in water constantly since the can can explode.

This look delicious, I am actually drooling lol :)

I LOVE this! But I use Butterfingers/not Heath bars! And I mix the milk & caramel in a bowl and pour over the cake! Yummy.

This looks amazing and yes, I "could" drink the sweetened condensed milk. lol Just pinned this! Now just need to "find" a reason to celebrate. Father's Day!!

Is there a eay to add this to my pinterest site?

Also, do you have a "Pin it " button on your toolbar? You can get one on the pinterest home page or help section or whatever they call it.

How does this only have 5 ingredients! That's so temptingly simple. I'd love to try this with different candy bars -- so easy to mix things up that way!

Sally @ sallys baking addiction

who knew a recipe with such simple ingredients could produce SUCH a showstopper cake? This cake looks truly divine. Love it!

I've made this for years, only difference is I use a German chocolate cake. And, I put the sweetened condensed milk and caramel on while cake is warm, then chill. When cold, put on the whipped topping. So good!

Yum! This looks delicious. I'm just not sure what a Heath bar is. Is it like a Skor bar??

@Jayne-I couldn't find Heath bars so I used Skor

Gay smith

Yes. A Skor bar is similar to a Heath bar. Chocolate covered toffee.

Susan Shields

My boyfriend does not like chocolate. I made this one day and now it is his favorite cake. lol

Yes, I could drink sweetened condensed milk from the can and I actually have. LOL! That stuff is good!

Try sweetened condensed milk in a cup of coffee. It's a treat.

We call this Goo Cake and add the milk and caramel as son as it comes out of the oven so they melt into the hot cake. We then keep it in the fridge overnight and serve it cold. It seems to get better the longer it stays in the fridge but usually doesn't Last too long because it is so goooood.

How many holes do you poke in the cake?

Cheryl Webb

Is a Heath chocolate bar like a Skor Bar?
We don't have Heath here in Nova Scotia, Canada!

Yes Skor bar is very similar to Heath bars. I have made this using ice cream hot fudge topping in place the caramel too. LOVE LOVE LOVE this cake! its a "make and take" cake. meaning you make it and take it else where, so you arent tempted to eat it all yourself! =)

Yes, I believe the candy is similar in taste, but I am not sure about the size. I remember the Skor to be a flat candy bar. The Heath Bars are a crunchy toffee bar with nuts and covered in chocolate. I hope the explaination helps!

I've always known this recipe as Better than Sex Cake. it is always a big hit!!

This cake looks incredibly tasty, sinful and sensuous. Wow!

Have done something similar for years. Instead of sweetened condensed milk and cameral topping, I use chocolate syrup. Layer german chocolate cake, chocolate syrup (generous portion), crumbled Heath bar and whipped topping in dish. Do this twice and then refridgerate.

Shelly (cookies and cups)

. Hope you can link up at my trendy tuesday party!!

I made this the other night and OH MY WORD. Everyone had an absolute fit over this-even my brother-in-law who NEVER eats sweets! I know I will be making this for years to come-thank you so much for sharing!

I have made this for years. I too, mix together the sweetened condensed milk and the caramel and put it on while the cake is still warm. I also sprinkle some of the Heath bar over the top of the cake when it is warm and cover with foil. It makes the candy melt into the top of the cake. Once cooled, I put into fridge. When ready to serve I frost it with cool whip and add remaining Heath candy to the top. So yummy!

Rachel @ Bakerita

This sounds so amazing. I want some right now! Completely decadent, and completely delicious :)

This looks delicious and I'm gonna have to make it. I, too, could just drink sweetened condensed milk. Love it.

This is HEAVEN. I can almost taste it from my laptop screen!

oh wow this looks so nice - now following you

Valery Elias

Looks really easy and sounds luscious!

I made this cake this morning. IT IS AWESOME. I only eat gluten free so I made it with a gluten free chocolate cake and all I can say is WOW. I have never had a gluten free cake taste so good. Thanks for sharing this recipe!

I've loved this cake for a long time now. My mother-in-law introduced it to me years ago, but she made the cake from scratch using the "Baker's Chocolate" recipe for their German chocolate cake recipe. I have to tell you, that it's wonderful!
Yes, in my family we actually do drink the condensed milk right out of the can! I'm from Brazil and we do it all the time!

Linda Long

This looks fabulous Veronica. I will have to make this soon.

This dessert looks delicious and i really want to make it for a dinner party that i have coming up. However, im based in the UK, i cant seem to find any Heath or Skor bars where i live :-( What chocolate can i substitute instead.

Just regular toffee bits would work!

Kimberly Starks

Making this right now!! Can't wait to try it!!

Super use of chocolate, Nikki. It would be great if you linked it up to this week's Food on Friday: Chocolate

I make this cake with chocolate fudge topping instead of the sweetned condensed milk. It is delicious!! I will have to try the condensed milk version :)

Interesting, I make a Better than Sex cake (my husband calls it Almost Better than Sex Cake) just like this but also add a bottle of hot fudge topping after the sweetened condensed milk & caramel topping. Try adding the hot fudge, it is AMAZING. (You have to heat it up a bit 1st and stir it so it will pour easily :)

I love this cake as well! I mix a small box of vanilla instant pudding into the cool whip and it adds a nice touch as well! Yummy!

I just want you to know that I am an absolut fan of your website! Everything you posted, I tried and it comes out perfect. Thank you so much.

I found your recipe on pinterest and I'm so glad I did. I made this yesterday and we all LOVED it. Thank you!

Sheryl @ Lady Behind The Curtain

This pinboard has re pinned this cake as their own. Here is the link!
All the pictures on this board are stollen. I have reported them to pinterest. I don't know if anything else can be done.

Do you understand how Pinterest works? People pin things they like and other people click on the picture and come to the website. That is how I got here. While I am here I will look at the rest of the blog and maybe check out some of the advertisers. No where did they take credit for the recipe. The link brought me here and I checked it out. That is how it works..

I just got back from the store to make this and I am so excited! My family and my boyfriend love Heath bars so I can't wait for them to try it! I unfortunately can only have a single bite due to a strict diet I am on but it's okay! :) I will let you know how it turns out!

Chung-Ah | Damn Delicious

Love that you've made cake mix into something so divine!

My friend made this for us - DELICIOUS.

Quick question: Can you freeze this or do you have any suggestions for serving this at a tailgate party on a hot day.
Another quick question: have you ever made this in cupcake version? (may be easier to transport for tailgate)
Thanks for your help!

Hello! I made this last week! It was delicious (my boyfriend was making all kinds of noises while eating his cake! lol), If you are looking to "make and take" these, I would say make them the day of your event. It was much better the first day than the second. My cake started loosing its texture with all the deliciousness in it(but I have texture issues). And while I didn't make them as cupcakes. I don't see why you couldn't!

Yes, you can freeze this cake. Make the holes in the warm cake and drizzle with EB and caramel topping. Wait til the cake has completely cooled, then cover and place in the refrigerator overnight. In the morning, add whipped topping and candy bits. Cover and freeze. I wrap all edges with Saran Wrap. Have successfully stored in freezer up to a month. It is very moist. Our family loves it this way.
PS I am careful not to store foods with strong flavors in the same freezer. =)

Cherry Pie

I got my recipe from my Gram. She called it "Better Than Sex Cake" (yikes Gram!) But we use german chocolate cake mix & we also pour a jar of chocolate fudge or hot fudge topping onto the cake. SOOOO good! I always get compliments & asked for the recipe OR to make it for someone :)

My mom and I have made this cake for years, without the cool whip though. We call it Euphoria Cake, so yummy!! Can't wait to try it with the cool whip!!

Think this would be good with white cake? We aren't fans of chocolate cake around here but all the rest sounds SO good.

Joy Franklin

This is my absolute favorite cake in the world!! We always called it "Fat Mans Cake"

Felisha harshman

Can you make these into cupcakes?!

Tonya Steele

Hi: I just found y our website surfing. This cake sounds heavenly. Did you make it up? I am going to post this recipe on my website tomorrow and I will link it back to you. Have a great day and keep the recipes coming!

This looks amazing! We have a church dinner coming up and I think that this might be the dessert that I take! Thanks a million!

This recipe is good, but here's how you make it even BETTER. My family has been making this cake for decades. We call it the Robert Redford or "Better than Sex Cake". I will just simplify this for you using the above recipe. Use a German chocolate cake mix instead of just a chocolate cake. On step 4 I only use 1/2-3/4 of the sweetened condensed milk, here's why. Are you ready for this?? Step 5, mix 1/2 jar of Mrs. Richardson's butterscotch caramel with 1/2 Mrs. Richardson's hot fudge topping. Pour over cake. Continue on with the rest of the above instructions. This recipe didn't come from the side of a box of cake mix. Enjoy!

Nancy L

We from Indiana call this "Better than Sex Cake". we made it and love it.

Have made this for years also using German chocolate cake mix like one of the other posted.. We called it "Better than Sex"! Yummy.

Jennifer Pettry

I made this cake with this recipe yesterday, and it was delicious! And very simple! :)

Heather Lucius

We make this cake ALL the time. It is always better the next day once it chills in the fridge. Excellent.

Thanks so much. This cake was delish. I can't wait to make again with snickers instead.

Just made this cake. It's chilling in the fridge. I hope it tastes as good as it looks! I'll let you know

Oh my Gosh. I was just reading all the comments and "the Lady Behind the curtain " really seems a little uptight. Had you not posted this wonderful cake on this website I would of never found it or made it.. Thank you so much for sharing. I enjoy going through all your receipts. Gives me wonderful ideas. I love to cook.. Can't wait to try my cake with my grandkids

Ok. So here's the deal. when I first made this cake and chilled a few hours I felt it was amazing. The second day I thought perhaps it was a little to sweet and thought to myself the next time I make it I may cut the caramel and condensed milk in half. now on the third day it seems the caramel and the condensed milk soaked back up into the cake to make it gooey chocolate cake. I would however add a bit more cool whip to make the top layer a little thicker. The lightness of the cool whip would be a nice touch for the richness of the cake. Wow. There's half a cake left and I will now stop testing it so I can continue to fit into my jeans. Lol. I wish my family would finish the darn cake before I decide I need to try some more. Just sayin..

Mary Jo Pierce

What a drooling delicious cake! I had to chuckle at #8 with "Store leftovers in fridge." The chance of any leftovers is highly unlikely! Great post! Thanks!

This looks absolutely delicious and I am definitely going to make it.

I made this tonight as we had company over, and it was so good. I don't want to share any of the leftovers! Thank you so much for sharing this recipe!

[email protected]

Certainly trying this! Looks so yummy!

I can't wait to make this (found you on Pinterest)! Do you know if I could prepare this on a cake board instead of in the pan? Just for presentation purposes.

WOW! I just made this cake and am counting down the hrs till i can eat some. Making it for my work buddies. Husband said, "please, get it out of house so i dont eat it all". It looks scrumptious

Lyn Hamilton

I've made this cake many times and it is always a hit. One of the guys at work calls it my "history cake" because he says as soon as I put it down, it's history. I can't wait to try it with the marshallow cream!!

I make this cake every year for a food auction fund raiser at my husband's work. I change it up a little bit though. After, you put the caramel on I let it sit overnight and then I warm up hot fudge ice cream topping and spread a thin layer over the top, and finally add the Heath chips. No Cool Whip. I enjoy both ways of making this dessert.

I have made this cake for years the only diferance is that we call it Better Than Sex Cake. Also we make a moist choch cake, wait for it to cool & then put holes in it with a wooden handle of a wooden spoon, then pour your condensed cream milk in & then your carmel topping in after that. You then put the cake in the fridge over night so it can all set up. Then you put your cool whip or whip topping on top of the cake, we don't put any kind of candy bars that are crushed on top of it, I suppose you could, but we just never have, everyone said they have loved my cake the way it is! You can make this cake different ways I guess, so basically it's to each there own. As long as it comes out the way you want it to & like it that's all that matters!

Hi Nikki - I was lucky enough to stumble upon this recipe yrs ago in a recipe book just for deserts published in..I think the 70's or 80"s..
Yes Jane is right.! It was originally dubbed "Better than sex cake".
I work in a salon - (99% of women) - there is always a ton of compliments.. and much fun with comments (you can imagine. ) when this cake is brought in.. It is the BEST cake and is my "definite go-to" to impress company or friends!

Hi! Just a time saving tip I found! My grocery store actually sells HEATH BAR CRUMBLES! So you don't need to chop the Heath bars, just zip open the bag and sprinkle1 Viola! This is on my stove, getting ready to be devoured and it looks delish!

How big should the holes be/how many?

I just made this cake for a meeting. The meeting has been postponed and trying to find out if we can freeze this cake and i can use it at the next meeting maybe in a week. Can we freeze this cake.

Looks so yummy, I'm braving the heatwave to bake this for company tonight! Thanks..

I make this cake with a marshmallow cool whip frosting. It is soooo good. Thanks for the recipe.

Thanks for the recipe! It's currently in the oven cooking for my Mom's birthday! She's going to be pleasantly surprised :)

Kitty, You can just use whipped cream with a little vanilla sugar and melis instead of the cool whip. Cool whip is just a non-dairy ready made whipped cream.

Hi! looks delicious. I'm based in Stockholm, Sweden. We don't have all the ingredients needed Dorothys yummy cake. What is Cool Whip? Any suggestions on something to use instegs of it. There is an American Food Store in Stockholm, but I'd prefer to use ordinarie indredients.

My IPad wrote Dorothys and insteag. I meant to write "in this" and "instead. Sorry!

In Canada we have Skorr bars, that I think are similar to Heath bars. So we call it Skorr bar cake and use devil's food cake mix. We also put the broken Skorr bars on the cake as well as on the cool whip.

This sounds great, and I am going to make it for Christmas. I have a question. If I made it the day before, would it be good the next day? I didn't know how long it could be in the fridge before it started to not be so good. Thanks!

I love this cake. Make it all the time with 1 exception. Instead of using sweetened condensed milk and jarred caramel sauce I use cajeta which is a super gooey and rich caramel sauce that is made from goats milk but it actually has the consistency of sweetened condensed milk. It's amazing. You can't always find it at the regular grocery store but if you have a good latin market around they always have it. I no longer eat regular caramel sauce. Yum!!

This looks good and I plan to make it Saturday. If we have a 40 minute drive will it keep that koon? Or will the topping melt?

Just wanted to let you know i made this cake. Absolutely wonderful! So easy and not too sweet. To be honest i was expecting a massive sugar dump in my mouth and then spitting it out, but no, everybody loved it. I whipped my own fresh cream and hardly sweetend it to help balance it out, but even still, i think it would have been okay using coolwhip if that's what someone wanted to go with. This is a keeper. Thank you.

Does the sweetened condensed milk make it wet like a tres leche cake? I'm trying to avoid that consistency.

Jane White

Oooh. That looks way too sweet for me (and I love sweets)! I get a toothache just looking at it.

I made this cake 2 times in 3 days for work and home and everyone loved it! Super easy to make. Will be making this again in the future.

I've been doing it for years but I use German chocolate cake mix and that is awesome

I've made this several times, and it's always a hit. Only difference is that I've never used sweet condensed milk - only caramel topping - and german chocolate cake. It was so sweet that I can't imagine adding the sweet condensed milk, but I just may to see how it tastes.

Mary Woodward

We always used Mrs. Richardson's fudge sauce in a jar instead of caramel. I think I'll be trying it with the caramel sauce!!

Use Butterfinger candy bars instead of Heath. Just as good for a change.

It was originally called "Better than Robert Redford dessert" about 30+ years ago. Now it's called "Better than Sex Cake"

Paula Roy

Love this cake!! Make it with chopped Buttergingers too. Yum.

I love this recipe! I use skor bars tho with butter pecan cake mix! Mmmmmm.

Made this for my girlfriend as a part of her graduation dinner! This cake is phenomenal! I switched out the cool whip with real whipped cream and it was heavenly. Great recipe!

Sue Richards

I too use German Chocolate Cake. Its delicious. I use Heath Bars or used Toffee Crunch found in the in the baking department, along with t chocolate chips and such. Thanks for the recipe.

This thing is awesome. Have made it with different candy and all have been good. Butterfinger, Heath and Zagnut. Mixed a few of the bits in the batter when I baked it as well. YUMMY.

Betty T.Smith

i bet if you heated the milk and the caramel together for 30 sec. To 1 min. It would pour over the holes better.

Jeanette greenwood

Linda smith

I've made this recipe for years, but has anyone every made this and frozen it's?

Ive made this cake for several years now and its always a hit.. I use crushed butterfingers. My recipe is called Holy Cow Cake and after eating that first bite you definitely want to say Holy Cow thats good . lol

Bob H.

Let the cake cool before putting on the cool whip!

In my area, we call this "Better Than Sex" Cake. Also, I use chocolate morsels. After the cake has baked for 10 minutes, I pull out the rack and sprinkle the chocolate morsels on top. Pop back in the oven and back according to box directions. I also use German Chocolate cake. Once out of the oven and while the cake is still warm, poke small holes all over the top (I used handle of wooden spoon). The slowly pour the evaporated milk over the top, filling the holes you've just made. Now let the cake cool. Add the caramel topping, cool. Then add the Cool-Whip. Sprinkle the crushed Heath bar over the cool-whip. Best cake ever!

Do you have to leave this in the pan you cook it in? Or can you put it on a platter after you take it out of the oven before you poke your holes?

Elizabeth S.

I found a similiar recipe on Betty Crocker Recipes site. It sure does taste yummy!

I use duncan hines dark chocolate fudge cake and I also use a jar of hot fudge sauce along with the caramel sauce. People eat it up!

I made this cake gluten free by substituting the cake mix. I also had to find a caramel sauce that was gluten free. It was SO GOOD. I love that it's not super sweet.

Gertie Mae

I made this cake over the holidays and EVERYONE LOVED it! It was super easy to make, cute and served really well, the whole presentation of it is fabulous. One of my favorite go to desserts now. Did I mention that it is absolutely easy and incredibly delicious? I want to call it magic cake though, the way the caramel and condensed milk absorb and distribute through the cake is just so decadent and fabulous. utterly in love with this cake!

Eileen Ross

Cake needs to be cooled completely before topping with Cool Whip.

I made a few changes to the recipe.

I used:
2-9 in. round pans
2-small containers of cool whip OR just 1-large container of cool whip
1-large container of caramel topping
1-large container of hot fudge topping
1-bag of Heath candy pieces

I left the sweetened condensed milk out of my recipe.

I followed the recipe up to the point of filling the cake.
The changes I made are as follows:
1) I mixed the caramel and hot fudge topping together and put it into the holes in the cakes. I used half for each cake.
2) I topped both cakes with a small layer of Heath candy pieces.
3) I mixed the rest of the Heath candy pieces with the whipped cream and spread it on top of both cakes.

In order to not have to wash a bunch of dishes I only used one mixing bowl, one mixing spoon, and I kept rinsing them off for every new thing that I wanted to do.

The cake tastes the best when you let it sit for 1-2 days so the flavors can meld together in the cake.

Linda Trudeau

I went against my better judgment and followed the instructions exactly. What I wanted to do (and should have) was wait til the cake cooled before adding the whipped topping. Putting it on the warm cake made it melt some. I found I had to spread it quickly and get it into therefrigerator to stop the melting process. I'm sure it will be yummy regardless!

Chef in Training

so sorry, I should clarify to let the cake cool before spreading on the cool whip. Thanks for bringing that to my attention :) I have edited the recipe to say so. I bet it would still taste yummy either way! I hope you liked it!

Shedelah C

I make this same cake. I make a wet coconut cake like this. I use white cake mix sweetened condensed milk coconut cream milk cool whip coconut on top. And I put jelly beans on top for Easter.

I've been making this for years also, best cake ever! Mine is called turtle cake .. Not sure why and I use real whipped cream , the flavours really compliment each other.
