If you love healthy breakfast ideas but don’t want to do a whole lot of work in the morning, overnight oats were made for you. Honestly, it’s as easy as stirring together a couple of ingredients in a jar, placing it in the fridge, and enjoying the next morning. That’s it! There’s no cooking, baking, and you don’t even get any extra dishes dirty. It’s a total winner all around.

The beauty of overnight oats is that you can make them as simple or creative as you’d like. The base recipe is delicious, and filling all on its own. How to Make Overnight Oats

About 8 years ago, my husband and I were visiting our friend Frank, and for breakfast he offered us what was basically oatmeal served like cereal. He poured old-fashioned oats into a bowl with cold milk and added a little bit of brown sugar to sweeten it slightly. I had always eaten hot oatmeal for my entire life, so this was a revelation for me!

However, having the oats that way yields oats that are a bit firm for my taste. The solution? Overnight oats. Basically, you combine oats and your liquid before going to bed. Let it sit overnight, and in the morning you&rsquoll enjoy softened oats, nice and cold.

If you&rsquove only ever had hot oatmeal, it&rsquos worth trying it this way. It&rsquos my favorite way to eat oatmeal!

To start, combine old-fashioned oats with a spoonful of chia seeds. I absolutely love chia seeds, and they&rsquore really healthy, too. If you&rsquove never had them before, they will absorb liquid and become soft, giving the oatmeal a thicker consistency.

Add your liquid of choice to the oats. I use reduced fat milk, but you can also do almond milk, soy milk, coconut milk, and so on.

Next add a tablespoon of pure maple syrup. I like using maple syrup because it has great flavor and it stirs in really well. Honey is a bit too thick to stir in easily.

Cover the oats, then stick in the fridge overnight, or for at least 8 hours.

When you wake up in the morning, everything will have plumped up and absorbed a lot of the milk. It&rsquos now ready to eat!

And as you may expect, there&rsquos a lot of room for variation with overnight oats. You can jazz it up with cinnamon or other spices, add fruits like bananas, berries, and so on, and also add nut butters, yogurts, and more. Feel free to put your favorite ingredients in!

How To Make Overnight Oats

Before I share all of my top 10 recipes, I want to share with you the basic steps to making a batch of overnight oats.

Honestly, making overnight oats is a pretty simple process. All of the recipes I will be sharing with you use the same basic prep steps:

  1. Pick out your ingredients - Decide which kind of fruit and milk you want to use.
  2. Layer the ingredients - Mix them up so that the oats can soak up the wet ingredients.
  3. Seal them tightly - Store them in an airtight container.
  4. Refrigerate them - Keep your overnight oats in the refrigerator overnight and up to 5 days.

Meal Prep Plain Oats

Another way to speed up breakfast is to make a few jars of plain overnight oats and store them in the refrigerator. Then, you can grab a jar, add your favorite fruit and toppings, and you are ready for breakfast.

Liquid To Oats Ratio

When you make your own overnight oats, remember to use a 1:1 or 1.25: 1 ratio of liquid to oats, depending on how liquidy you like the oats. Consider adding 1/4 cup yogurt when using the 1:1 ratio to add extra creaminess. That means if you use 1 cup of oats, add 1-1.25 cups of some kind of milk, water, or liquid. This will help the oatmeal have enough liquid to soften correctly. It will also give your overnight oats a porridge-like consistency!


Overnight Oats

2 cups gluten-free rolled oats
1-1.5 cups unsweetened coconut milk
1 ripe banana
2 tablespoons chia seeds
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon cinnamon
3 tablespoons chopped walnuts (optional)
1 tablespoon cacao nibs

1. Add the rolled oats and coconut milk to a storage container and stir.
2. Add banana and mash well into the oat mixture.
3. Add all other ingredients, except cacao nibs, and mix well.
4. Seal storage container and store in refrigerator overnight.
5. Remove from fridge after 10-12 hours and sprinkle cacao nibs.
6. Add any fruit toppings.

Since overnight oats only with water can be a little tasteless, adding dairy free alternatives or cow&rsquos milk is recommended. This way, you can have creamier and tastier oats.

However, for people who do not want to ingest milk in any form, you can add in chopped nuts, mashed banana, or dairy free yogurt to enhance the flavor. For those who are intolerant to dairy, you can incorporate any other type of milk like soy, almond or coconut milk.
